Help! Something is eating my flowers

I messed up and let a baby caterpillar, or so I thought that was what it was, live and now I'm regretting it. It is wrecking havoc on my flower containers. I have petunias and it (they) are destroying them. I'm a beginner and was so proud of how well they were doing. There is all kinds of little black things (maybe poop?) on the stems and I've also noticed what looks like little pieces of blue lint here and there. Is that cocoon material maybe? How can I get rid of them or whatever else you might think it is destroying my flowers? Is there a spray or something I can buy at Home Depot or Lowe's? Thanks for any help you can offer me.

I found an insecticidal soap that claims to be all natural or whatever, and it's from one of those stores. It helped my petunias. However, I did have caterpillars on my cabbage, with the little black poops, and it did nothing for them. I had to pick off the caterpillars and I think I got rid of them for now. I'm not sure what was eating my petunias, but they were definitely getting eaten and were not able to grow until I started using the soap every couple of days.
