Re: clicky poll: do you have a man who is handy.

  • I'm the handyman in our house.

DH is very handy when he actually does things, but he has little desire.  Every now and then he'll get motivated and do a bunch of stuff at once, but that is rare.  However, woodworking or building things isn't in his repertoire at all.  (I really wish it was!)  But for plumbing and electrical work, and general fix-it kind of stuff, he's pretty good.

  • DH can fix anything electronic, plumbing-wise, mechanical, etc. but I definitely win the painting/finishing contest. He is mr. big sloppy fixit.  do NOT give the man a paintbrush.

it's odd because my dad was SO woodworky/house-fixy, like he'd always be looking for a home improvement or yardwork project to do.  DH is exactly the opposite... unless the problem in question has to do with cars or electronic stuff.

on the other hand, when i needed rescuing from a giant bug in the house, my dad would catch it and chase me around with it... but DH always rescues me from the big and immediately disposes of it.

  • I said no.

Mine CAN do stuff and he will sometimes, but he's notorious for not looking up directions.

Case in point: we needed to regrout some of the tile in the bathroom. FIL bought us materials (since we're living in their guest house.) DH says he's going to take care of it.

On the way home, I got a phone call about how it looked like crap. Afer a little questioning, I discover he didn't wipe it. He sort of tried with a dry paper towel. Yeah, I ended up in there with a damp sponge scrubbing while still in my work clothes. When I asked why he didn't look it up on YOutube, he told me to shut up. His dad asked the same thing.

  • He is but I am handy with tools as well.  We tend to fix things as a couples effort.  But a lot of the time I do leave fix it projects for him to do when he comes home.  It makes him feel useful.  When it comes to the cars, he does anything mechanical but I help.

  • almond, you and c are super handy!  when he is building like that does he prefer quiet time and being alone or would he let someone observe and sort of teach them/ put them to work?  dh has the ambition to do stuff like that but seems to lack the confidence.  btw, even if c wouldnt want dh around, y'all can borrow ojr saw horses. lemme know. dh got them when doing all our window coverings in plywood.

If you weren't able to get all the grout off I have a super duper easy way to do it.  I've never seen it mentioned on HGTV or DIY maybe because it's not cheap, but it works like a charm.  Go to Sallys or some other place and buy a bottle of pure acetone.  Wipe only the tile area (not the grout you want to keep.)  the acetone desolves the grout and you can remove it pretty easily.  If it is stuck on in clumps, use a toothbrush on the area.  Clean up with water and then seal the grout/tiles.

Hopefully you didn't have to work too hard to get it off.

  • Dan's pretty handy with home/garden type stuff.  Cars, not so much.  I end up diagnosing car problems and taking them to the shop.
