Neighborhoods South of Baltimore City

Hey Ladies! H and I are finally thinking we're going to take the plunge and buy a home. I think areas just due South of Baltimore city would be best for commuting and to be close to my family. Problem is, we don't know much about these areas.

Are there any areas that you can recommend? Any areas we should explicitly avoid? We're just starting to look so I want to get an idea of what we're up against. I don't want to go much further south than Glen Burnie and no more north than Catonsville.

Re: Neighborhoods South of Baltimore City

  • If I were looking in the areas you described I would check Linthicum. It kind of gets forgotten about, but there are these gorgeous old established neighborhoods there and some of the houses are to die for. Disclaimer: I know nothing about the schools there.

There are also nice areas of Glen Burnie but I don't know specific neighborhoods to avoid. I am not a big fan of the Brooklyn Park area, fyi. I had some work sites there and did not feel safe while out on them. I also happen to like Pasadena but that might be a tad too far south for you.

  • I also was going to suggest Pasadena. It really isn't to much further south then Glen Burnie depending on the area you get to.

  • we live in halethorpe.  our zip code is 21227, you need to watch out for which side of the beltway/US 1 you choose.  We live off I-95 near 195.  Homes are affordable in our area and we are happy here.

I was hoping that you would chime in! I knew you lived somewhere around there. We are needing to stay in an affordable area and want to keep the purchase price under $300k so Severna Park is out (as much as I would love to live there) it's also a little further than we can do, due to DH's travel.

    Thanks Linzee!

  • We really like Arnold but it sounds like it would be too far for you.  We got our house for less then $300,000 but it's a ranch with 3beds and 1 and 1/2 baths.  We bought in this area because of the schools.  I would avoid Brooklyn I've taught there for over 10 years now it's not a good area.  I stay because I love the people I work with though.

  • Are you looking for a single family or are you okay with a townhouse?  We live in a duplex and its quite spacious for a duplex.  There are several for sale on my street that are well under 300k, one of them was just gutted and redone.

I love my area because of its location.  I can get to I-95, I-195, I-695, and MD 295 in no time at all.
