When to pick pears?

We have a pear tree that is loaded down with fruit.  Last year we waited too late and the local wildlife made off with our pears.  I don't want to wait that late again, but I don't want to ruin them by picking to early.

Anyone know how to tell when pears are ripe for picking?

Can I eat them as soon as they are picked?

Animals will eat green fruits, so you may have to fence around the tree or your yard to prevent this.  This can be difficult so good luck with that.

As far as ripeness, when you can push on the pear a little and it gives slightly, they are ripe for eating. You can even just try one. It won't kill you to eat a little of an unripe pear, it just won't taste very good and will be hard to bite into.  Pears should be sweet, juicy, easy to bite into  with a little grainy texture when ripe.
