Your AC setting

Our electric bill has been running about $100 a month. We got ours this month and it was $230. I think it may be that our AC runs a lot. Where do you keep your AC set at?

Re: Your AC setting

  • We set ours at 70 and turn it on only when it gets above 85ish and is humid.  Otherwise we just open all the windows and turn on ceiling fans.

  • We don't turn ours on until it's consistently up in the 90s and too humid to breathe.  When we do use it, it's set between 75-80.  I'm always cold, so I don't really like using AC.

  • I get cold real easily, so I set mine around 82.  But I do have fans.

  • 85 during the day when no one's here, 75 in the evening starting about 5pm, and 73 while we're sleeping starting about 9.  It still runs a lot; its barely gotten down to 78 yet and its 8:30.
    nothing
  • If we have it on it is set to 73 when we are home during the day, 78 in the evening and 82 at night. If we aren't home during the day it is set to 82.
  • 82 during the day and 78 when we are home. It gets turned off in the evening and the house gets opened up to let the delta breeze in. I run the circulation fan in the evenings just to help keep the air moving and we keep our ceiling fans going pretty much all the time.

this...particularly, the "humid" part.  if it's not humid, we just let the ceiling fans do their thing.

last summer, we got a bill for $360 for ONE MONTH.  we went out immediately and bought a ceiling fan!

  • Check your air filter too- if you haven't replaced it in a while, your air conditioner is having to push harder (against all the debris/pet hair/etc.) and it will run longer to get the house as cool as it is set.  That made a difference for us--dropped 30 dollars between between the last bill and the one we just got yesterday, even though we've used it more this month.
  • Oh my gosh, I can't imagine living with my air set in the high 70's-80's! I commend anyone who can do that, I wish I could, for the sake of my bill! I am ALWAYS hot though. My air is usually set on 67, I *try* to turn it up to 70 at night, but I almost always wake up in a sweat and turn it back down. This is with fans also.

BTW, I am no expert on green living, I am very new here and have been lurking while trying to learn to live "greener" :)

  • We don't have one.  At least... I don't think we do.  We just bought this house in May and I haven't seen one of this big units outside.  There's a window unit in one of the closets upstairs from the previous owner but I don't think it works. And it was 107 here today and has been over 100 all week.  And actually really humid.

I spent almost every summer of my life except 2-3 working at summer camps that had no AC and had you outside all the time.  You quickly learn to tolerate the heat.  I do have a fan on me while in my office during the day and my office doesn't get any direct sunlight so it stays pretty cool.  Then mid-day I'll take a quick cold shower to cool off.  Also drinking a lot of ice water helps as does wearing skirts and knit tops.

ETA: I just did some quick math and I think if we had a central AC unit it would run our electric bill up to $800/month!!!  Holy crap!!!!!   So, I'm really happy we don't have one now that I've learned that.

  • We had ours set to 80 yesterday and I learned it's on the same fuse as my dryer, so I can't do laundry AND run the A/C.  Fortunately around 8pm it cools off enough to open windows.

I haven't quite figured out what to do for my dogs here.  We just moved here in May and have a great deal of humidity, which they aren't used to.  We've been leaving the central fan on and a box fan in the kitchen, but the little guy is still crated for his safety, so I worry about him getting too hot.

    Twin boys due 7/25/12
  • usually 78. 77 at night (mainly because DD2's room gets really really hot).

DH always complains about being hot, but I guess I'm just used to it. I grew up in AZ and my parents rarely let us put the a/c below 78. Usually it was set to 80 during the day and 82 at night. So when DH tries to put the air on 76 at night, I'm the one complaining that I'm freezing! ;)

We leave ours set at 85 during the day and have a little fan blowing toward our dog's crate. He hasn't died yet!

I don't have A/C, but i have noticed that doing laundry early in the morning, or late in the evening, using only cold wash and not running the dryer all make a difference too, if you aren't already doing this.
