if you have a sprinkler system

I've never had a sprinkler system, and our house we moved into last year has one, so can anyone help me with some really dumb questions?

We had guys come adjust a few sprinkler heads on Monday, and since then we've had some standing water on the side of the house. I *think* there is a leak, but I'm also wondering if there's some reason the water's around immediately after their visit.

1. In each zone's valves (that are in the ground), should the valve be completely off? It seems a couple are kind of halfway between on & off.

2. If I turn off the valve for the zone where I suspect a problem, can I leave the programming on & the rest of the yard will get watered, just not that zone?

3. We just had a main line leak repaired on the other side of the house in January. Any underlying problem that would cause two leaks in 6 months?

4. Any websites that you recommend for a crash course in sprinkler stuff?

Thanks in advance.

I strongly recommend buddying up with a friendly neighbor to see if they can help you. If that's not a possibility - contact a local landscaper and ask them for some advice.

    1.  I could be wrong but I think they should either be completely on or completely off.  The one's we've had were off or on. No inbetween.

    2. Correct.

    3.  This is why I suggest a reputable landscaper.  They would know these things and advise you appropriately. If your system is an older one, that itself could be the issue. If it's new - it could have been installed wrong and still be under warranty.  Check into it with a professional. You don't want to monkey around with amateurs on something like this.

    4. Find out what system it is. Go online and google the manufacturer. Call their customer support and ask them if they can send you a brochure or even help you with some of these questions. They may also be able to refer you to someone in your area that installs their system.

My dad told me not to do this because it can "burn up" your electrical box since your electric box is running even though the water is not.
