Visiting Portland - need ideas!

DH and I are dying to visit Portland - we really want to move to the Northwest in the next 3-4 years.  We want to "live like locals" when we visit so that we can really get a feel for what it's like to live there.  What would be the best area to stay in?  We're thinking of renting a vacation home rather than staying in a hotel - any you know of to recommend?  We'd ideally not want to rent a car for the entire week - so convenient public transportation is a must (I know they have great systems out there).  Is it easy to travel from Portland to Vancouver, WA on the public transportation?  I'd like to check out Vancouver also while were there.  We also have a 2 year old son who will be coming with us.

Re: Visiting Portland - need ideas!

  • I don't have any advice about a vacation home, but I'd recommend trying to stay as close to downtown as you can.  Public transportation is really easy here (including going to/from Vancouver).

Where in Missouri are you?  I moved to Portland from Missouri too.  :)

  • We live in St. Louis.  How do you like it out there?  Any tips on planning a big move like this?  Of course our biggest thing is securing a job for at least one of us before we would move!
  • My H and I actually moved out here without jobs - but that was in 2007, before the economy got bad.  Coming from Missouri, it took me about a year to adjust.  I moved here in the fall, and it was a tough adjustment, especially going in to the rainy winter.  Now, though, I don't think I'll ever leave.  I LOVE it.  Portland is just very different than Missouri.  :)

  • I usually use VRBO.com or HomeAway.com to find vacation homes but living here I've never looked for houses or apartments in Portland. I'd also stay as close to downtown as you can because of the public transit. NW and SW Portland are really nice, the Pearl District is swanky.

  • My friend has some places for rent on Airbnb.com.  I've never used the website but it's something you could check out.

As far as getting from Portland to Vancouver, it's not impossible to do via public transport but it's definitely not easy.  Renting a car would be much easier.  Maybe consider renting a car or doing ZipCar just for that day?

I didn't even know it was possible.
  • DH and I stayed at a hostel in NW (very close to the Pearl) and then a guesthouse 5 years ago. We stayed in private rooms and the locations worked out very well to all the places we wanted to visit- just used public transportation. There are some nice places posted on airbnb- haven't stayed at any in PDX but have used airbnb for other cities and they system works well.

  • Check out www.trimet.org.  That is the website for our transit system and you can put in a Point A and Point B (trip planner) and it'll tell you how to get there on transit - like Mapquest.  I work on the west side of Portland and have lots of coworkers who use transit to/from Vancouver.

I'd never seen that site!  Thanks!   I never thought of ZipCar - I'll have to look into that.

  • Getting between Vancouver & Portland is easy - i do it every day!

check out http://www.c-tran.com/ for more info on bus lines that go to Vancouver (tri-met) doesn't offer any, but you'll need http://trimet.org/ to get train schedules or other bus schedules.  Check out their Trip Planner before you come, so you are prepared for fares and transfers.

The Trip Planner doesn't work for going to Vancouver, so here's the deal: You can take the Yellow Line Max to Delta Park and take a couple buses over the bridge, or you can take an express bus (there are three) from downtown Portland to various points in Vancouver.  The express bus is going to cost more though - 3.25 each way.
