New in Omaha

Hello Ladies:

I posted a couple months ago (April I believe) that I would be moving to Omaha (108th and fort area).  Well, I'm HERE!  Yeah.  My house is unpacked, my husband is at work (While I continue to look for work), and truth is I'm a little bored/lonely.

What is there for a girl to do around here?  I don't want to spend much money, because, well frankly I don't have a job, and there isn't much money to spare.  I've been to Mahoney state park, I've walked along the river trail/pedestrian bridge, I've been to standing bear lake, lots of time outside (because then I can take my dog).

Also, anybody got an idea of where to get a job?  My background is in higher education (I've been checking careerlink, and also the schools websites).  Someone on here in March recommeded UNMC - love that idea, can't get an interview there (have applied for 4 jobs there).

Thanks in advance ladies.

  • No help in the job area, but I just wanted to say welcome to Omaha!
  • The Omaha World Herald had a lot of school jobs recently. They are in Sunday's paper or you can go here: http://jobs.omaha.com/jobs/search/results?searchType=browse&category=education_training
  • Welcome!

I am off of 114th & Military, so not too far from you!

  • Welcome to Omaha!  What about volunteering?  The Humane Society is pretty close to you.  Or, you could always sandbag. :)  The Omaha sandbagging isn't too far either.

  • Welcome!  We aren't far from you - are you open to going to a dog park?  There's one just off of 110th-ish and Maple Street if that interests you!

I don't know if this helps at all, but here is the site for the city's park's & rec department - http://www.cityofomaha.org/parks/parks-a-facilities

I can give you more info on hiking trails and other areas like that if you want!

Have you tried calling the HR department? Applying for 4 jobs and not even getting a letter of "Sorry we have found someone that better suits this position" seems odd to me? Maybe something didnt go through?

Welcome! I'm from Lincoln and do not get to Omaha much but once every couple months. Also, welcome to the board :) Everyone is wonderful here in their own little way!

  • Welcome!!

Do you have your NE/IA teaching license? If not do that right away. Then contact each school district and get on their sub list. Once you get your foot in the door it is easier to get a job.

Also, what about some of the colleges (community or university)?

  • Thanks for this link... I hadn't seen this site yet.
  • That would be great... my husband works there as well.  I've applied for coordinator positions, as well as a couple administrative assistant positions
  • Welcome to Omaha! My DH works for Union Pacific - he is always going on about how many different types of jobs they have and how ridiculously high the paychecks are there. . . even clerical stuff is supposed to be pretty awesome.  Maybe they would have something there...
