Hi ladies--My husband and I are trying to plan our first vacation since the honeymoon and we're overwhelmed by the possibilities. All we want is a Caribbean beach and an easy way to get there from BWI (ie. some of the more intriguing Caribbean islands are out). Cruises and all-inclusives welcome. We're trying to stay below $1000 per person. Any suggestions? Anything to avoid? Thanks!
Re: vacation help!
I think you can get to Antigua direct from BWI. But, most of the Caribbean shouldn't be too far. Turks and Caicos was 1 hour to North Carolina then 3 hours to Turks and Caicos. I think you can do Jamaica fairly cheaply. Unfortunately, T&C is one of the more expensive islands.
In 2003, I did a Carribean cruise with my parents and brother on Carnival. We went in September so the prices were low and the stops were great - Belize, Grand Cayman, and a couple other. The one thing to keep in mind about cruises is that the excursions are an additional cost. But, you can book excursions independent of the cruiseline, which makes them quite a bit cheaper, but require more planning on your part. I personally probably wouldn't cruise Carvnival again, but I've heard of a lot of people who really enjoy it.
I just did some basic searches on Expedia and found a Carnival cruise leaving from Bmore July 31st, 7 nights, $899/person.
That's just one example. I think for a budget 2K and under cruises are the way to go.
I like Montego Bay Jamaica - you can fly direct, its about 3 hours there. and resorts are ~20 minutes from teh airport.
I also like Bahamas - we went to "My Lucaya" resort a few years ago and really liked it. They have direct flights there too - you can be on the beach in 4 hours.
Is this a recent development? When we went in 2008, it took us like 12 hours to get there with all of our connections! There were no other options then.
I think it is US Airways. I think has been within the last couple of years.
I could have sworn, but I guess I don't know what I'm talking about. Then I thought it was Aruba but I didn't find anything on Kayak for that either.
