vent: name change

I was making work travel plans yesterday and realized my work credit card is still in my maiden name. I asked to get it changed to my new hyphenated last name. My hyphenated last name is 17 characters plus the hyphen. I was told Chase can only put 19 characters on the card. Really??? I can't have my legal name on the card? Guess I will have to keep the card in my maiden name and hope I do not have any issues with using it.

Re: vent: name change

  • Strange!

Ha, I just checked (b/c my maiden name was hyphenated) and I had 19 characters, I guess I was lucky

  • Well, that's just rude!  What happens if your legal name is more than 19 characters long?  If I use my middle name, my full legal name is 17 characters long.  Sheesh...maybe I should have thought about that before I changed it!

Eek that stinks...but since your new last name is hyphenated maybe it wont be an issue, since your first name is the same and your maiden name is still somewhere in there...if that makes since.  Like if mine was legally Xandrea Christine Maiden-Married but the credit card said Xandrea Christine Maiden... I don't think they'd give me a hard time, ya know?

Or am I totally wrong and yours is different?

True.  Some of my CC's used to say (names for example) Hannah Smith-Johnson...but my license only says Hannah Johnson

I was always scared that I'd be asked for another form of ID or something when clerks checked the name; but in ~5 yrs of having the CC I never had any issues.

  • I feel your pain as I hyphenated too and am still working on switching my name over.  Several of my CCs can't put the hyphen in my name (they have a space instead).  My last name is 16 characters with the hyphen, who knew it would be such a hassle.

I had this too, which seems even more confusing!  Maybe that's why I was never questioned; they could have thought that I had two middle names instead or something
