What are you irrationally afraid of?

I just read a post on another board about a girl terrified of bees.  What are you afraid of?

Re: What are you irrationally afraid of?

  • My #1 is things that fly (birds, butterflies, bugs, etc.).  When I was little I was riding my bike and a bird hit me square in the head.  Felt like a baseball hitting me in the forehead.  I've been deathly afraid of birds since.  And along with that comes anything that flies... or hops... really any insect (crickets and grasshoppers- I have terrible memories of them on my grandparents farm).

  • Snakes!

Someone hiding in my closet or under the bed. Always have to check before I can go to sleep.

Walking by a window that doesn't have a curtain or blinds on it at night. Totally freaks me out. I always expect to see something looking in.

  • Driving in an unfamiliar place when its dark out. I'm afraid someone is gonna come walking out of the ditch. I never had this fear until recently and I"m not sure why all of a sudden?!

Fear of getting lost---like when I drive----or in big buildings----etc. I hate not knowing where I"m going. The road trip 2 years ago that me and my DH went on we traveled 2300 miles in 6 days and not knowing where we were gonna end up or where we were going (We were flying by the seat of our pants) kinda drove me nuts! Unfamiliar places!

  • Spiders.  They are littler than me, why should I be afraid of them?  And most of them aren't poisonous enough to hurt me.  Irrational fear.

The dark.  I am terribly afraid of the dark.  We have lots of night lights.

  • Skunks...or rather getting sprayed by a skunk. When I was little there was always family's of them living all around our neighborhood. I've come so close to getting sprayed so many times that I'm terrified it might actually happen someday.

  • Snakes is my #1. I can't even see them on TV without tensing up and shutting my eyes.  Frogs are almost as bad.
    * DS1...allergic to dairy, peanuts, eggs and turkey *

  • Water  As soon as I'm in water (pool, lake, etc) above my stomach I start to get nervous.  If I can't touch, I freak out.  I did have swimming lessons when I was little but I didn't swim much after those so now I'm too afraid.

  • Our house being broken into. I think about it sometimes during the day that my poor 5 lb dog would be defenseless if someone broke in. And sometimes at night I hear noises and then just stare at our door and windows like someone is going to come in!

  • Getting a car accident.  DH hates driving or riding with me because I like freak out or every little thing.  I never think anyone is going to stop or I think they are going to pull out in front of me.  If I'm driving by the time I get to where I'm going my hands hurt from gripping the stearing wheel so tight.
  • Ummm...so many things!  I have some major anxiety issues.

    1. Something happening at night (fire, intruder) and having to choose which of my girls' rooms to go into first.

    2. Being in a public place and a shooting occuring.

    3. Walking by our kitchen window at night and seeing a face staring back at me.

    4. Snakes at the zoo-I can't even have my back to their cages.

  • My perfectly wonderful van (or car, whatever I'm in) breaking down and being stranded.

This.  I'm terrified of water, and won't go in if my feet can't touch the bottom.  Similarly, I'm terrified of bridges.

When I was driving back and forth from Topeka, I told DH about how the water was up the middle of the interstate on Hwy 2.  He responds, "Don't drive off the road!"  Indifferent

  • Snakes.

Someone breaking into my house, esp. if I'm there with DS.

My parents getting sick or dying.

  • That my house will catch fire, before I leave the house I will check and double check that I unplugged the hair straightener, and I never burn candles.

I am also afraid of something happening to my kids when they aren't with me, I let my oldest go on a vacation with a friend's family a few weeks ago and I thought I was going to have an anxiety attack!

  • Spiders..I faah-reeek out when I see one. Aand I am convinced that when there is one there must be more. I actually just freaked out on H the other day because of them. He doesn't get my fear and when there is one he takes forver to kill it. It is so bad that I have actually puked from seeing one. Also when I see one then all the sudden I feel things crawling on my and get very jumpy.

I am also afraid of something happening to my kids when they aren't with me,

This is probably my # 1 fear and I think about it a lot...getting hurt at school, choking on their lunch at the daycare, wandering off, someone taking them, drowning.  I've had major anxiety about it on more then one occasion convinced I'm going to get a phone call at work about one of the above. #1 reason why they've never spent a night away from us, ever.

I have a fear of bugs/bees/snakes/spiders but nothing that would make me hyperventilate...I just don't want them touching/crawling on me.

Not a fan of bridges either, especially those over water...I think they'll colapse, or that we'll get in an accident on one and it will send our car over the edge. Or just being surronded by water. The chance of falling in, the kids falling in/drowning, crashing and ending up in it.

My kids falling out of the car while we're driving.  :)  I always hit the lock button at least 10 times while we are driving...drives DH nuts, especially in his car since it autolocks. :)

  • Something happening to my kids when I am not with them.  I honestly asked DH if he thought the world would end quickly (big sonic boom and done) or slowly (everyones skin falling off from a nuclear blast) because if I weren't with my kids and I knew bad things were happening it would kill me.  It is one of the reasons daycare is close to my work, so I could get to them quickly if I needed to.  (also, for non end of the world related things like accidents and illness)

and raw meat.  I hate raw meat, esp chicken or turkey.

  • Water I can't see to the bottom of, i.e. lakes/ponds.  I won't even stick my hand in the water, and the thought of swimming in it makes me panicky.  Who the heck knows what's under that water?  My foot could touch tree branches, tires, poles, DEAD BODIES, etc.  **shudder**

I *hate* this too.  I have dreams about bodies of water and the things in them, they scare the shiit out of me.

  • Earthworms.

    Prosthetic limbs. (don't ask)

My kids smothering themselves in their sleep.

Me too!  It wasn't until I got into triathlons that I went back in lakes.  It had been years.  And even now, I pretty much lake swim on race day only.  ::shudder::

  • Furbies - Remember those creepy little toys?! Ahhh....hate them with a passion!

Also, I hate sleeping with the closet door open. I guess I have always been afraid someone was going to jump out at me in the middle of the night.

This too! As soon as it gets dark I have to close our curtains. I'm usually fine if there are a bunch of people at our house but not if its just me and my family.

Thought of another - Bats! Those little things scare the shiiitt out of me!

The dark.  I hate the dark.

This.  And everything that goes along with it....have to have the closet door closed, the shower curtain open, doors to unused bedrooms fully open or closed (not cracked), blinds closed, and usually a night light of some sort.  I will go to any length to sooth my kids fear of the dark b/c of this.  Although it's probably me that's putting the idea in their heads.

    This!

  • Zombies outside my bedroom window, like I Am Legend style. When I'm home alone I get in on the other side of the bed since my side is by the window.

I am also afraid of driving in a rural area by myself at night, I think that someone may come out of the ditch (ala Texas Chainsaw) and try and get me. I am terrified of head lice also, I had it once as a kid (girl scout camp) and was traumatized and then just a few weeks ago a friends daughter had it and I am STILL fah-reaked about it. I even went to my doctor and had him check me TWICE.

I am also scared of getting fired. I was laid off once when I was a teenager and was traumatized and I still to this day get antsy around our annual review time.

I am terrified of head lice also.....

I itch at the mention of this and since I work in the beauty industry, we're always hearing storys about Lice...gah!  AND, we manufacture beauty products, and guess which one of our products had a 60% increase in sales in the last year.....our Lice treatment products....I'm sure this has something to do with bedbugs too as I'm sure people use it to try and treat those as well, or don't know the difference.  :(
