I am going to try to start commiting to help the environment (and also save money) by using natural home cleaners. I am going to keep going through what I already have and as I run out I'm going to use vinager and water and whatever other recipes there are. Right now I am out of toilet bowl cleaner and I was wondering if there is anyone who uses natural cleaners for the home have a recipe for that? Also if there are any websites that lists recipes I can access here at work. I do have one bookmarked on my home computer but since we're going to the store tonight I might as well pick up whatever I need.
TIA!
Siggy coming soon....
Re: Natural cleaner recipes?
Can't think of a lot but just for general cleaning:
I use vinegar when I wash jeans, I turn them wrong side out and use nothing but a cup of vinegar, it cleans and helps prevent fading.
Vinegar and old newspapers will give glass a great shine.
I like alcohol to clean my sinks and kitchen/bathroom counter tops. It's also good for cleaning glass if you don't have vinegar. Just don't use alcohol on anything that's painted, it's a solvent and will mess up the paint.
A few lemons run through the garbage disposal will freshen it up.
I've used ammonia to clean toilets...and I've used straight clorox, not natural I guess, but when you don't have a cleaner specifically for toilets, it works.
i've switched over to mostly natural cleaners for a while now.
for the bathroom/kitchen
tubs/sinks - i use borax (it's a Godsend) or baking soda (another blessing) depending on which one i have on hand.
toilets - i use clorox's new greenworks toilet bowl cleaner. but when i don't have that, i use either baking soda/borax.
counter tops - i use greenworks all purpose cleaner, but when i don't have that i use a mixture of borax/water/dish soap.
i also have another spray bottle with a mixture of water/vinegar/tea tree oil that i use to get rid of mold in the bathroom
i think the only things that i still use that are not natural are my swiffer wets. i need to find something that will substitute for that.
regarding websites...i frequent a couple. i'm not sure if you have a livejournal acct, but there is a group on there called naturalliving that i have found very helpful. i also go to http://www.care2.com/.
hth!
Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions!
Tippykins - How much Borax and baking soda do you use for your toilet bowl?
i don't usually measure it out. i just kind of sprinkle it around. i looked it up online, and there are quite a few website that have exact measurements for different ingred to clean toilets baking soda/vinegar, etc.
Wow...those are great ideas! I will have to give some of them a try!
Jane...I did not know that people actually use rubbing alcohol to clean their bathroom counters! I had some spill on my counter a few weeks back. When I went to wipe it up...it left that part of the countertop sparkling! I wondered if I could use that.....if it would mess up the finish?
