Clomid and Exercise

Sooooo, I was just flipping through the new Fitness magazine and they have an article about ttc and exercise. It mentioned that you shouldn't exercise if you are on fertility drugs because since it makes the ovaries grow in can cause them to twist.

The last time I was at the dr's office I asked him about my running, and if it was safe to continue. He asked if I was running 6 miles a day and and I replied with "no, 3". However, my training has me increasing miles. Last week I did 4 miles twice and this weekend my "long" run is 5.2 miles. I do plan on calling the doc soon to verify this is okay.

This will be my 1st round with Clomid, but 4th round with fertility drugs (the others where with Femara). I test on Fri, but honestly don't think I'm pregnant :(

Anyway, just interested in seeing what the experiences for other have been.  Where you told not to exercise? If so, did the fertility drugs finally work?

TIA.

Re: Clomid and Exercise

  • Someone with more experience can probably answer this better, but if I recall correctly from my time on the TTTC board, the not exercising stipulation is for women who are on the enormous cocktail of fertility meds leading up to IVF.  Clomid is very mild in comparison.

I only did two or three cycles of clomid because it made me a crazy person.  I don't remember much about those months honestly but I know I wasn't told not to exercise.  Ultimately, I got pregnant w/out meds, but my issues were apparently all linked to my thyroid.

  • My doc hasn't made an exercise recommendation, and I never asked. Before I started clomid (when I was starting metformin for PCOS), she told me that I need to work on losing weight--which does kinda suggest some exercise.

Thanks for posting this question--I'll be asking her at my next office visit.

  • I was never even told not to exercise with IVF, if I remember correctly. Maybe not to do anything too athletic. Although frankly, by the end, I didn't want to do anything too strenuous. I was way too tender (and given they got 14 eggs, no surprise!) YOur ovaries get huge then.

You're being monitored on the clomid, right? They should be able to see how many follicles you're growing -- clomid generally won't give you more than one or two, which would be more like normal ovulation.

If you're not being monitored on clomid, please change doctors!

  • Thanks for the replies girls.

Quizzle- I am being monitored- thanks for caring.

I'll def have to mention it to my doc. The mileage is increasing like crazy and last night during my hill workout I thought I was going to puke/pass out. Oh Mr. Sun, can't you please take a brake. Anyway, thanks for the responses. I'll have to call my doc.

  • My doctor has specifically instructed me to continue exercising while on clomid.  Like Suzi said, exercising only becomes risky on high levels of fertility meds.
