I woke up about 2am to Mckenzie with a barking like cough (never has had croup but sounded so distinctive), I then realized she was having trouble breathing) sounded like she just ran 5 miles and was out of breath. Talked to the pedi on call and they said to go to an ER because the breathing was a concern (they could hear her in the background), my DH was out of town last night and they said I needed to call an ambulance because if something happened en route I wouldn't be in the back seat with her. So we got an ambulance to the house which felt like forever, we stood in the bathroom with the hot water on full blast to get a steam room going which helped the breathing a little while we waited for the ambulance.
I ended up following the ambulance to the ER because I would have had to call someone to get us home, she did fine the whole ambulance ride - about 1 block from the hospital the ambualnce stopped in the middle of the road (I freaked out) so I pulled up next to the ambulance and there was a woman standing in the middle of a 6 lane road, the EMT said Mckenzie is fine but stay in your car.
Once we got to the ER they immediately knew it was croup and said the breathing difficulties was from the inflammation near vocal cords (caused by a viral infection) which is also why she had the barky sounding cough. They gave her an oral steroid right away and then sent her for a chest x-ray (poor thing was put in a brace like thing sitting on a mini bicycle seat with her arms up in the air - she did way better then we thought she would in there) her lungs sounded coarse but the x-rays ended up being negative.
Somehow through everything I remained calm, I cried for a moment when the EMTs got here but they were able to calm me down.
She had battled an ear infection for almost two weeks and just finished a 3rd type of antibiotic last weekend. They said her ear still has puss in it and would need to be drained and see an ENT doctor and would probably put tubes in.
We had a follow-up with the pedi this morning, they called me first thing this morning to follow-up on how she was doing. They also agreed she needs to see an ENT...although the one they referred us to was booking out 1 month for a consult so I called the ENT the ER doctor referred us to and he has an appt next week for the consult.
Yesterday DHs grandpa was also found unconscious and his grandma called me ILs and rushed over to their house not realizing what happened, grandma didn't even call 911 (her memory has been touch and go - which made me nervous), they think grandpa has pnemonia and was dehydrated which caused him to pass out, he'd been under the weather for a few days and had a 102 fever the day before. They are kept him in the hospital last night to monitor him.
Sheesh! What a day, if you have any good thoughts and prayers please send them out way!
Re: Awful night! (Long)
Oh my goodness, how stressful! Many thoughts and prayers are heading your way sweetie. I'm glad to hear that the docs were able to help your DD right away and same for your DH's grandpa.
I honestly don't know how you stayed so calm on your drive to the hospital, you poor thing!
Thanks ladies!
I don't really know how I kept it together, I kept telling myself I need to stay strong for M, and she seemed to be in good spirits and was actually hammin' it up to all the EMTs, nurses and doctor!
oh my goodness! your family is in my t&p.
i am so impressed with how calm you were able to remain during the drive and everything...so glad she's on the mend.
When it rains it certainly pours. Hugs!

Oh my goodness poor thing! Glad that she's relatively ok and that you took action. I couldn't imagine having to drive behind
and then when they stopped that would've freaked me out.
Thinking of your family too
Thank you all! I really don't know how I held it together so good but I'm glad I was able to which I think helped Mckenzie stay calm!
I just realized I left part of the story out...when the ambulance stopped about 1 block from the hospital...there was this woman standing in the road! She was yelling and screaming, the EMT had to call police who came right away. When we got into the ER the EMT told me that the woman was yelling about someone (that she acted like was standing near her but no one was there) murdering someone! When the police arrived they knew the woman, I guess she was mentally ill.
We go see the ENT next Thursday for a consult, I'm not sure after that how long it will take to get the tubes placed....will keep you posted!
