Need advice about window potted herb garden

Hi Gardening board!  This is my first post over here.

I used to have an amazing indoor garden many years ago.  When I moved to NYC, my plants all went to my mom and I haven't had a plant since. My former apartment got so little good light and now that I'm living in a space with light, the space isn't ample enough for the many plants I once had. So my green thumb is a little rusty.

I got a basil plant from a colleague this week.  It's just a baby at this point (although, I used a couple of leaves for my omelet this morning...yum). It's actually good timing because I was planning on making a potted herb garden for my kitchen window sill that gets plenty of Eastern sun. At some point I would like to get a metal tray for the window sill as well. I need to check my storage space for pots and such. Some in the traditional terracotta and some like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/mandel-plant-pot__0124175_PE280369_S4.JPG

Thinking about having mint, rosemary, thyme as well.

Any other suggestions for herbs that do well in an indoor container? How often should I water?  Any suggestions for what to do if I go away for a few days? (I don't really have a way to have someone care for them.)

  • Do you have a cat? If so, I'd stay away from plants with grass-like leaves - long and thin since they seem to be liked by cats more.

I'd honestly just get several herbs and see which do well. There are so many factors that you can't control - drafts, outside temps vs. inside, soil issues, pot issues, etc. that I don't know if people could really say what will do good for you.

Do you have a balcony or some way to actually put them outside during the summer months? That will help them all in the long run even if its just a few months a year.
