Anyone have their kids get one? My baby is going in tomorrow and I am a nervous Mamma.
Re: frenulotomy?
I don't have any direct experience with it other than what we studied and experienced in our rotations at school. But, it's actually much better to have it done as an infant than as an older child-- an infant under 6 months can have it done in a doctor's office whereas older than that, the procedure has to be done as a surgery with general anesthesia. etc.
It is also pretty dang safe-- there are almost no complications and it's extremely rare to have any from the procedure.
Hope this helps!
I would echo this. One of my best friend's sons is tongue tied and she opted not to have it cut since he was eating fine from a bottle so she exclusively pumped (for a year!) Her son is 18 months now and eating and talking normally.
ETA: I don't mean to make it sound like you shouldn't be having it done, just wanted to offer the information about my friend. Best of luck with the procedure. I'm sure it will be WAY more difficult for you than for him.
Caroline had it done about a month old? She had some latching issues so my Dr snipped it, but barely. He didn't think it was that bad, LC thought it was bad. She still never latched after that lol. But, she was fine after it was done (not fun to go through and watch etc though) and she is fine now. I'm almost convinced she wont have a Gene Simmons tongue either :P
My nephew had his snipped at 10. No one noticed until he came to visit us one Summer and my mom caught right on. Kid couldn't stick out his tongue and he had issues saying some words. Everyone I guess thought he just mumbled. Wasn't definitely more of an issue for him, but he was fine too.
I can't remember why now, but I was talking to my dentist about DD getting it done and he said that was good for dental reasons, but have no idea why now!
Goodluck .Like I said , it's very traumatic to watch, but she was fine a minute after and luckily she was little enough that when we got home she slept in her swing and woke up fine. I wish we had Lamb Swings as adults when we have things done :P
Thanks ladies,
Dr. recommended to wait. He is gaining plenty of weight and he thinks unless it gives speech issues later, we'll re-examine at 1 1/2.
Thanks for your input!!
Good news to wait, Erin, as long as he's feeding okay. If you'd like me to take a peek when he's older to assess range of motion and function for speech and feeding, I can. I'd ideally like the docs to refer to me to assess function before clipping...had success with avoiding the procedure with one kiddo a couple months ago because they let me check. His speech errors were related to something other than tongue restriction. After appropriate speech therapy, he's now 'graduated'...without needing a frenulectomy.
