Doctors Visit

So I had my 37 week doctors visit today and she did an internal exam. I am 1 CM dilated and 90% effaced. Can we just say I am SCARED to death that I am going to go into labor any minute. I know this is hopefully not the case but I just was in shock when she told me about the effacement that I didnt even ask how that correlates to me going into labor. Will I go soon or in a few weeks? OMG!!!

Does anyone have any advice for the 1st time mom who is clueless??

Re: Doctors Visit

  • I had the same experience!  1 CM and 90% at 37.5 weeks on a Friday.  My water broke on Monday night.  Good luck!

  • Why are you scared if you're 37 weeks?

  • Because a baby is about to come out of her bajingo.  I think that's scary enough.

  • Uh, labor can be a pretty scary thing if you're a first timer. Even at 40 weeks.

I was 39 weeks and was about 3cm for four straight days. My water broke after that. I wasn't scared, I wanted to get that shiz over with, pronto. But, I'm scared of next time. (Ouch!)

Just do what your gut and doctors tell you, you will be alright, promise. :) Just try and relax and enjoy the quiet you have now.

  • It was so weird, I was scared thinking about it too and then when I actually went into labor, I was abnormally calm. Just remember to breathe.... it helps a lot ;) GOOD LUCK!

  • I want to say I was 2 cm at 37 and 38 weeks. 4 cm at 39 weeks, had Lily two days after the 4 cm report.

So you can walk around all dilated and whatnot.

Either way, progress is being made, and you're getting close! Good luck!

  • I was 2cm and 50% effaced from the time I was checked at 34 weeks.  I didn't have her until 39 weeks 4 days.  I was never checked again until I was in labor, and I was 4-5cm about 8.5 hours into labor.  She was born 4 hours later.

Try not to worry.  Relax, and enjoy your last few days/weeks with your H.  It really isn't that bad, and it won't seem as bad if you go into it calmly.

  • You'll be good.  And yes, I know that's hard to hear, especially your first time.  Like the others have said you can walk around somewhat dilated for a few weeks.  And thankfully labor isn't like what you see on TV...where your water breaks and 2 seconds later you have a baby.

Enjoy your last few days of being pregnant.  I agree with Jennifer80808, go into it as calmly as possible.

  • Well yeah. Im freaking out about how this kid is gonna come out of me too!  I'm so uncomfortable that I really can't wait to just get it over with already...

i thought she was scared for health reasons of the baby!

I obviously don't have any advice since I'm about 4 weeks behind you, but congrats!  You're almost there!!!

  • Thanks ladies! You have made me feel better.

I dont feel like i am scared to walk around dilated, I am just stressed over the 90% effaced. I just feel like I am so close to being 100% effaced that then the dilation will start and I will be going into labor.

I am trying to be calm but its hard. I am stressed about work as they have not found a person to fill in for me yet and I am due in 3 weeks!!! I guess I just need to relax and realize they will be fine without me.

I also had a little spotting when I just went to the BR but I think that is normal after an internal exam. Correct me if I am wrong. :)

  • That can be totally normal.  I only had one internal at 34 weeks, but I did have more cramping/contractions that day as well.
