Legal name changing

I haven't done this yet. The only place I've changed my name is on FB and gmail...not my actual address but the name that shows up.

I was reading Kelly's blog post about name changes and I also feel like I have an identity crisis. I was all gung-ho about signing my new name immediately after the wedding, honeymoon etc but I seem to have reverted to just my maiden name (as you might recall, I am hyphenating maiden-married) because nothing has my married name on it. Not to mention, lots of people have been calling me Mrs. Marriedname so it's even more confusing of a feeling.

It totally feels like something is missing and DH really wants me to start using the new name.

How do I begin the process?

Re: Legal name changing

  • I am just starting this as well.  I first went to the DMV b/c my license is about to expire on my birthda on Tuesday...well apparently you have to first get your social security card changed.  So I went to the Social Security office and now have to wait for that to come in the mail before going back to the DMV.

I still answer the phone Amanda Hunter...and someone called me out on it today...

  • I think it varies by state. I was able to go to the DMV before I went to the SS office. So far the things that I've changed are: license, SS card, joint bank accounts, insurance cards, payroll, and emails. I still have to change: deed to our house, passport, personal checking account, and everything at my university so my diploma is in my new name.

I still find myself saying "Manning" sometimes, but I kind of think thats normal. We were those names for all of our lives up until a few months ago, I think itll just take some time.

  • I thought you had to go to the SS office first?  In NC I had to go there first before I could go to the DMV.  Oh and in NC you have to wait 24 hours, which is crap.  So anywhoo, I got my SS done and then went to the DMV the next day only to find out NC won't take a marriage license from out of the country.  Then I had to go to the bank and get a name change form notarized and go back to the DMV.  Talk about a PITA.  I haven't had any issues with my CCs except for AMEX.  Apparently they have to mail you a form and then you have to mail it back.  At some point I should finally get a new card.

Once I get the new AMEX I feel like I should be good.  It's funny I past a sign last night, a street I always drive on and it just hit me that is my new last name.  HAHA!  I normally notice things that say Kelly but I had totally not thought about this sign saying my last name.  Yes I'm a dork!

  • Maybe my dmv lady was just lazy and didnt care to ask. I just showed her our marriage certificate and she said ok. I guess I got lucky.

Thats funny about the street sign Kelly!

  • I changed mine at SS this morning and I'm going to the RMV tonight. The lady at SS said I shouldn't need my new card because she printed me a letter showing the name change? I had to start signing my new name at work and I had to pause every time to make sure I signed the forms right lol!

  • It definitely takes effort to remember sometimes.
  • Well boo!  The lady said I had to wait until I had the actual card!  What a frustrating process...
  • I'm totally not looking forward to this, I heard that Hawaii takes forever to get you your official certificate (like 2-4 months?!) so I'm guessing I won't get to do all that til like x-mas!
  • Amanda that's stupid.  And I don't think it's right.  I would check the state website.  But my new card only took a week I think to get.

Heather we were lucky because we got our cert before we left st lucia.

  • The whole name change thing is such a process, and it's not very fun.  I've done it twice (married/divorced in the past).  I always started w/ the SScard first, then DL.  Once you do that, you can change your bills and accounts as well (but some might need a copy of your marriage license as well).  Then insurances can be changed.  But I found that the car insurance can't be changed until you change your name on your actual car (at least w/ my insurance company) and my student loans were tricky as well.  That's the last step I have and it's been years!!!!!!!!!  Suck a pain, but great at the same time.  Good luck ladies w/ the name changes.

Oddly enough, my insurance company actually changed my name already. That is the 3rd place where I exist as Mrs. Maiden-Married. I called them before the wedding to see if any changes were required with our upcoming change in marital status, and they changed my name right then, effective on our wedding date.

Thanks for the input, ladies. I think I'll start with SS office.

  • Yesterday I accomplished changing my name with SSA and the DMV (over an hour but I got it done) and called all my credit card companies. I just need to change my name on my car loan, student loans, insurance and at work lol

Me too! Got the SS card thing done, but waiting on the RMV until I have the card. It does feel kinda weird. I've already tried to revert back to maiden name twice without realizing it!

The guy I talked to at the RMV said they'll run it through a check with SSA and if it doesn't match they'll run the check again in 3 or 4 weeks and if it still doesn't match then you'll get a letter in the mail saying you need to fix it :) Maybe for once Fall River is nicer than which ever one you had gone to :(

  • I'm still using my maiden because like Heather said, it takes 2-4 months to get the license.  So whatever...only socially and fb land know me as my married name for the time being.

Totally jealous of this!!!!!  And they won't change my home owners insurance either until the title on my property is changed.  Such a headache.  I wish these last 2 things would be easier. :(
