a couple questions about references
1) Do references always have to be from people who supervised you?
2) What do you do about references if you are applying for a job but you don't want your current employer to know?
I ask because I graduated from grad school a couple years ago and my current job is the first "real" job I've had since graduating. So most of my references are from internships or before grad school. I don't want my current boss to know I'm looking (she is very weird about that kind of thing). Can I put down a co-worker who has a higher title than I do (in addition to my older refs)? She and I work very closely together.
TIA!
Re: a couple questions about references
that should be fine.
typically there is an application you fill out at some point and usually that is where you would list your references. there is also the option when you list your work experience where they ask for your boss's name and phone number. you could refrain from listing the boss's number and state not to contact current boss until final candidate decisions are underway.
and it is fine to provide references from a superior and the older refs from internship or grad school given the specific situation you provided.
it is suspect if all the references are personal and/or none are recent, so I definitely think having a professional coworker who is above you in rank will help a lot in giving them confidence in your abilities.
1. no
2. State that you don't want them contacted until an offer is presented
As long as you clear it with your CW, it should be fine. But check your company's rules about providing references. Some state that a reference can only confirm your dates of employment.
