iPhone Question

I am reluctantly biting the bullet and entering the world of technology.  I am getting an iPhone this weekend.  I know AT&T and Verizon both have iPhones.  Besides the $$$ and plan types, are there any other differences between the two?

Re: iPhone Question

  • In my experience, AT&T has a faster 3G network, but Verizon has a larger network. So you would have service in more areas with Verizon, but it isn't as speedy as AT&T's network. Check with your employer, they might give a discount at one or the other, mine does but only with Verizon and I got a discount at AT&T with my previous employer.

  • Verizon Network is better.  My AT&T iphone drops calls once a day on average. I'd base it off current location, amount of travel you do, etc.

Very important: the iPhone for Verizon does not allow data and voice at the same time (e.g. you cannot surf the web while talking on the phone).  Hopefully the next iPhone for Verizon does (rumor to be Oct).

  • Keep in mind that the coverage issues are going to be directly correlated to where you live.  I used to be on Verizon and I hated them - but they're fine (apparently) where I live now.  But I'm on AT&T.

I have good coverage and I love being able to use the original iPhone, in that it'll allow me to not only do data and call at the same time, but I have the option of keeping several apps open at the same time and rifling through them. I don't think the Verizon one has that.  Plus, when you're thinking of selling the older phone and trading up, I'm sure that the AT&T version will have a greater value than the Verizon one.

  • Totally agree with PP - the biggest decision maker for you should be service area for the actual phone, not the internet coverage. In Chicago, where we live, for example, my husband's AT&T phone is damn near unusable, but my Verizon phone is great. It just depends on your area.
