I'm about to give up on cloth

I am so frustrated right now and am hoping to get some advice so we don't have to stop CDing! Lately we have been having diaper rash issues. I don't quite understand why, but it seems like DD's poops are more irritating than they used be. If we don't change her pretty quickly, she gets a rash that makes her cry every time we wipe her. To make it worse, she is also pooping a lot more often than she used to (like four times a day), and it's unpredictable, so, every couple of days we don't change her in time and she gets a rash. And California Baby doesn't work well enough to prevent the rash.

So, we are now in a cycle - CDs for a few days until she gets a nasty rash, then we have to use disposables so we can use Triple Paste on her rash. Until the rash is gone (usually a few days), she cries at every diaper change. Then it's back to CDs for a few days until she gets a rash again in a couple of days. Ugh!

I feel like we need to just start using diaper rash cream at every diaper change to prevent these rashes, but, like I said, California Baby doesn't work. Has anyone has success with another CD safe cream?  I'm scared to use Triple Paste on cloth, even with a liner - I don't trust the liner to contain the cream, but am I just being a worry-wart about that? I'd rather pack away my diapers to either use for #2 or sell instead of ruining them (or pack them away until she hopefully starts pooping less often).

Re: I'm about to give up on cloth

  • Something seems to happen around the 1 year mark.  I'm not sure if it's the buildup on the diapers or if it is because of the change in toddler diets.  Have you done lots of diaper stripping, using grapeseed extract, bleach, original dawn, bac out? (not all together of course)  Hope something ends up working for you guys.
  • Hmm :( I think I remember being super frustrated too. I started stripping every wash for a while. I would run 3 cycles, cold, hot, super hot and put vinegar in at least one. We did this for a month or so, then it seemed to get better. We never got the rash though. We use the Grandma Eli's or something CD safe rash cream.

I have no advice; we had the same thing happen around a year and after trial and error and rash after rash, we had to switch to disposables :(  Maybe it's the switch to whole milk or the increase in solids?

  • Caroline got some pretty bad rashes from poop but if I took the diaper off and cleaned her up real good by the next change it was gone. Best creams I've used is Grandma El's and I've also used the rest of the white petroleum we got from the hospital and lanolin leftover from my BFing days. All have been fine with my diapers and I'm picky too :) goodluck!
  • T had bad takes rashed around the time we introduced whole milk. They were raw bloody rashes and painful too. I did disposables with triple paste for a few days. In the meantime, I bleached per the manufacturers guidelines. Bg recommends once per month with less than 1/4 cup. I had never bleached them before. This combination helped a ton. We use ca baby too, but I've berm wanting to try cj's butter. It's thick like triple paste and I think diaper junction has some on sale.

  • Thanks for the tips! I did strip fairly recently and I use bleach once a month. We don't think it's a build-up issue because it only happens when she poops. I actually have a few samples of Grandma El's that I am going to try.

Watts - I also saw that CJ's Butter got good reviews on diaper pin, so I may try that if Grandma El's doesn't help.
