My dad lives an hour and a half away. He invited us to a BBQ tomorrow night. I have to work until 4 so by the time I get home and pick up DH and get to my dad's it will be 6ish. His community is having fireworks at 9:15 so it would be about 10:15 before we could even start to think about leaving. Since DH and I both have to work Tuesday we decided it would be too much to go down to my dad's. When I told my dad we weren't coming he was clearly disappointed. Even though I know our reason for not going is logical (neither of us are good night drivers-get too tired, and I worry about an increase in drunk drivers on holidays) I still feel guilty. Why as a grown adult can my dad still make me feel guilty?!
Re: Stupid to feel guilty?
Grown adults or not I think we love and respect our parents and we never ever want to disappoint them. So when we do it eats us up inside. Its definitely not stupid to feel guilty. I would try to set up another cookout at a different time so you can still spend time with your dad.
I don't think it's abnormal to feel guilty, but remember that you're only saying no because it's just not practical.
Just say, "Dad, you know I'd love to come see you, but with our work schedules we just wouldn't have much quality time with you that day. If you are free on [future date], then we could spend the whole day together. What do you think?"
It's ok for him to be disappointed! It's great that he wants to celebrate with you, sad that you can't make it.
If you only see your dad on holidays, try and switch that up so that you make time for him on some random weekend.
