We did ours today (the 3rd) because we had people from as far away as Canada, NYC and Chicago, so they need(ed) Monday to travel. The 4th for us is as big a deal as Christmas!
If you remember from my post, this is DH's aunt's party, not mine, but a couple pics won't hurt
On the menu: pulled pork, ribs, BBQ chicken; baked beans; corn straight from the field; homemade potato salad, slaw, deviled eggs; and scratch lemonade.
For dessert, I ended up with (counterclockwise from behind the vase): lemon squares, blueberry-raspberry pie, chocolate pecan pie, apple pie, peach-brown sugar-almond cake.
I screwed up the lemon squares (a complete comedy of errors, but they tasted alright and no one knew but me);
the berry pie was as good as I remember it from the last time I made it 5 years ago;
the chocolate pecan was new and popular;
the apple pie was (I think) not as good as two years' ago, but everyone else loved it;
and the peach cake was a DUD.
The peach cake used 2.5 lbs of peaches and took me a full hour of prep in the kitchen followed by an hour of baking...and it just tasted like a cake with a few peaches. It was good, but not at all worth the time and ingredient investment.
Your turn!
Re: Post your 4th here!
My luau party went well but it was so humid it was nearly impossible to set up. For the first time ever, I couldnt wait until the sun went down because I couldnt even think straight I was so hot. I bought r/w/b lei's but didnt even pass em out because it was just to hot to add anything else to wear.
My main dishes were tropical pulled pork and smoked chicken and they were both a huge hit. I slow cooked the pork in orange pop, apricot jam, a ton of garlic, apple cider vinegar and teriyaki. I served it with your choice of various homeade BBQ sauces and Hawaiian buns. Everyone was raving how good it was which pleased me!
Side dishes were pot luck so we had pretty much everything. I made a macaroni salad that I thought so good I will be making it again this week! I had coconut shrimp that I forgot to make though so that was a bummer!
My red, white and blue dessert table was a hit! My sister had the cupcakes done from a new cupcake place and the flavors were fabulous. Chocolate peanut butter, watermelon lemonade, strawberry shortcake and white chocolate.
We had a bbq at the beach yesterday and I made this flag cake.

The kids play for hours with these rocket balloons.
Those pies look good!
Neat idea for the lemonade presentation:-)
Everyone's stuff looks fantastic! Boo on the cake. I wonder if you would like it better without the work?
My lemonade cake was perfect. The beans were overdone, but it wasn't my fault. The party started at 5, but we didn't eat dinner until after 7. There were a few things out, but not enough for 2 hrs. I wqas not impressed.
Everyone's parties look so great! I'm inspired to throw my own next year.
No, no one else really liked it either. It was the only dessert with leftovers. Every other pan was scraped clean, but there was a quarter of the peach cake left at the end of the night. I hate it when recipes from supposedly reliable sources aren't any good.
