We saw Ernie this weekend at State Theather in Detroit. OMG....it was so, so, so good. Seriously, if you were a Tigers fan growing up and have memories of Ernie calling the game, you must go. The play runs until mid Aug.
Before the play, I joked with Brian that I might cry if they played his speech from the night he said goodbye to the crowd at Co-America, when he knew he was dying. Well I was crying well before that part at the end. I should have brought kleenex along.
After the play, Brian and I have decided that we are not taking the girls to a Tigers game at least until they are 6 and 7 or 7 and 8. After hearing "Ernie" talk about his memories of his first MLB game and talking about what a special moment it is for kids to go to their first game, I want to make sure that the girls are old enough to know what is going on and hopefully have wonderful memories of it. Who knows, they may not even care, but I don't want to take away the opportunity of a special memory from them.
Ok, I'm off to crawl into bed. It was long, but wonderful weekend.
Re: Rave review for "Ernie"
This is a great way to see it. I remember my first game when i was about 7 or 8. Though I wasn't really into baseball, I still remember being amazed at the size of the park and getting really excited when everyone cheered. Good decision.
Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the review! I'm not a huge baseball fan and I definitely don't appreciate watching a baseball game. I wonder if this would make me appreciate it more. My grandpa who had 12 kids had a second job being an usher at Tigers games at Tiger Stadium. Somehow I don't think it was really a "job". We all got him a brick at Comerica Park. I'm sure he'd appreciate it if I saw the movie :-).
I'm loving this line is coming from you and with your screen name.
The play isn't so much about baseball itself, but about a wonderful man. It is about humility, family...it's a true love story (he was married to his wife for 68 year years and was most concerned about who would take care of her after he died). I just have so much respect for Ernie Harwell...even more after seeing this play.
Oh! Lulu!!! Anything I know about Ernie Harwell is through Drew & Mike who respected him a lot and interviewed him a few times. He sounded like a great person and I enjoyed listening to the interviews they did with him.
LOL! Red Wings was already taken so I chose another Detroit sports team. I DO enjoy watching hockey.
