IVF and/or MIF ladies

Long story short, I inherited some money and it will be enough to cover IVF. (check out my tttc blog if you want to know more) Originally when we thought we would have to save up for it we didn't think we would be able to do it until next spring or summer at the earliest. Now we would like to do it by the end of the year. The only reason we are waiting that long is I want to lose more weight first, preferably at least 30 pounds if not more.

My question is how long the whole process will take? We have met once with the RE at MIF so we are already patients there. They gave me a list of pretesting that needs to be done within 6 months of the IVF so we will probably get that taken care of this fall. I know we have to meet with the financial woman, which I might schedule in the next month or so.

If we want to do IVF by the end of the year (so preferably in Nov or Dec), how soon do we need to get things rolling? How soon would I need to start meds, etc? How long does the whole process typically take?

ETA: Do they try to keep everyone on the same schedule so they can do them all at once? I've heard some places do that

Thanks!!

    Yay for unexpected $$!

I would maybe start the pretesting in Sept or Oct october.  The testing doesn't take long but you will have to go to a meds class and I think they only offer one per protocol per month.  if I remember right all the pretesting had financial meetings had to be done before the class - but the results didn't have to be back.

This will also give you time to get your sonohystogram scheduled and complete. (it has to be the first part of your cycle).

I think  our first cycle, I did my testing at the beginning of Oct, got into the late Oct class and started my cycle/BCP near the end of Oct (25th or so). I was doing injections around the week of Thanksgiving and my retrieval was one of the first couple days of Dec.  Transfer would have been 5 days after.

    GOOD LUCK!

ETA:  They don't cycle everyone at once - it's all based on when you start your cycle.

  • I had already done most of the testing and such when we did the full IVF cycle for Chance.  But once you have that done, the meds to beta is basically 2 months.  You take bcp for 3 weeks, then a whole host of other stuff.  It's based on your cycle, but they will try to work it so that the ER/ET is during the week, not on a weekend (however, they will do it on the weekend if that's what ends up best-my first IVF that was a converted IUI ended with the ER on a Saturday).

I'd just call and tell them when you want to cycle, and the nurses will make sure to get everything worked out for you.

Congrats on the windfall, and good luck!  The IVF process is a lot to take in, so thinking about it early, and getting prepared is probably a good thing!  I always felt to overwhelmed in mine.

  • That is fantastic!  We are probably going to use a gestational carrier next year so I am interested in timelines for IVF too.

Thanks for helping me get some info too!

This brought tears to my eyes. This is exactly how we feel. We are so blessed! We both have been struggling lately (emotionally) so this couldn't have come at a better time for us. Its nice to have a glimmer of hope.

Thanks everyone, I think I will start focusing on getting things done after our vacation next month.
