daycare hiccup

I just got off with the supervisor for the state licensing board for daycare in MA-- the woman who we are interviewing and majorly considering for daycare had a 51a (abuse/ neglect report) filed against her in 2001... there were some accusations there against her minor son and innappropriate contact. She voluntarily surrended her license until 2007. Neither of her sons live in the home anymore (and I believe that one in question, is currently serving abroad with the military).

I'm totally freaked out by this but at the same time, she has been open for 4 years and I know someone who uses her care and raves about her. I am scheduled to meet her in 2 weeks so I'm hoping to get a better sense from her and trust my gut from there.

I also need to see how DH reacts to these reports when I talk to him tonight. Is this a turn and run situation for you? I am a bit panicked at the moment.

Re: daycare hiccup

  • Was the report substainated? Where it wasn't against the caregiver my concerns would be regarding supervision and background checks of staff or other individuals who would be in contact with your child. Red flag for sure IMHO.

That's what concerns me-- and although this person wouldn't be around the children since he's being deployed, I still am weary about her oversight. She does take her kids to visit her SILs daycare facility and vise versa and takes them other places. My gut says to run...

I'm just mourning the loss of the opportunity-- great location, price and schedule. This blows. I need to win the lottery.

  • My gut would say no too. It sucks that it seemed like it was going to be so great though. There's no way you can know everything about your DCP, but knowing this would just make me feel uneasy and worried when my child is in her care. It's stressful enough leaving your child at daycare, you need to feel 100% comfortable with the person who is watching them.

  • I would cut my losses and say no.  The child was under her supervision when whatever inappropriateness occurred, and that's a huge problem.  God forbid anything ever happened, you'd never forgive yourself.

  • If your gut says run, then run.  And I'd do the same, FWIW.

Ditto.  100% safety is worth sacrificing for the extra expense
