Time for a new (sprint) phone...

Soooo I was on my phone last night and went to end my call and it basically just fell apart haha.... oops.

I am up for a new phone anyway.... I have read some online reviews but I have narrowed it down to a couple.  So if you one of these and love/hate it, I would love to hear about it.  Thx

Do you know how it works buying a phone from Radio Shack like that for that price?  Because the same phone on sprint.com is $100 with my upgrade eligibility.

  • I think it works just like it would at the Sprint store, they just offer better prices sometimes. DH just upgraded to the EVO 3D & I was leary to order from Wirefly b/c of all their stipulations, but Radio Shack seems pretty straightforward, like Best Buy.
  • We have always gotten our phones free/cheap thru Sprint so I never really had a reason to go elsewhere.  I hate phones haha.  You should see how busted my Lotus is right now... I have no idea what happened!!!

I don't know if you get any discounts on your bill (credit union etc) but the best one I have found so far is I told them I was a travel agent... didn't have to show any proof.  I forget what the discount is but it was better than my college alumni or credit union ones.

  • I second the HTC phone that Mink recommended.  I also have an HTC android (through AT&T) and love it.  When I upgraded, I went through Best Buy because it was cheaper, and it was exactly the same process as if I had gone to the AT&T store, so I would assume it's the same with Sprint.  The guy at the AT&T store event told me it was exactly the same, and they wouldn't match the price.
  • I don't know much about the other 2 you're considering, but I've never been a BB fan and DH had one of the mid-grade Samsung Android's (similar to the LG one) & hated it. It was awful. He'd be sitting next to me & have no service at all, so if you can get the EVO for $30, I'd go for it.

I'll have to try the travel agent discount, we only get the 10% credit union one.

  • Yeah I wasn't about to pay $100 for that phone because I just don't care about my phone enough to have something fancy.  Loki has the BB Style and she really likes it and I liked it because it is a smartphone that flips... and since I don't care about my phone enough to be gentle with it I figured it was a good idea haha.  The other phone I posted got good reviews online but I haven't seen it in person.  I only picked those because they were $0.  haha.

But yeah if I like that Evo and I can get it for $30 I'll do that.

I *think* the TA discount is 18%..... I'm not 100% on that but I know it was more than 10% when they gave it to me.

  • I can't help you with either of the two you listed, but I have the Samsung Intercept and (after a much needed software fix and hardware reset by the guy at the Sprint store) works well enough for me. It's got a slide-out keyboard which, honestly, I don't think I could live without at this point after having it.

DH has the HTC Hero which is similar to my phone in a lot of ways, but no keyboard.

My friend has the EVO Shift and LOVES it (it's the EVO, with a slide-out keyboard).

My only problem (from what I understand) with the newer phones like the EVO and whatnot, is that you have to pay for the 4G service even though we don't have 4G service here!

Anyway good luck getting a new phone!

  • Sprint sucks... apparently now they are going to up our plan $10/month/phone when we get new phones because of something that took place in February.... we haven't been charged since we were grandfathered in.  So we are going to go from unlimited data on both phones to capped data and pay $20 more.

Hmmmmmmm.... may be time time look around.  Not that any cell phone carriers are better... but that just made me angry.

And the reason I didn't ask about any other phone is because I am not paying more than $30 for a phone... I just don't care about it that much to spend money on something fancy.

Yea, it's bulsh. That's partly why I suggested the EVO. If you're going to be paying for "premium data", you might as well have a 4G phone (that does work downtown & up into Ferndale).

& no dice on pretending to be a travel agent. They said there is no discount available for my made up travel agency. ;) I tried.

  • Really?  That's crazy!  I added that discount in person at a Sprint store about 2.5 years ago and I am the one that suggested TA to them and she said "oh you are a travel agent?  well we have a discount for that hold on".  Apparently not only are they offering less on their plans and charging more... they also aren't giving out discounts.

    ugh.

I am sure we will stick with Sprint out of laziness.

Do you know if I can just walk in with some old junky sprint phone and have them change my stuff over and NOT sign a new contract?  I think you only have to resign if you want a discount on a new phone.

  • I have the HTC Evo and LOVE that phone.  I get great service, love the apps, phone is fast, etc.  If you don't get that one, I had the HTC Hero before and loved it, but only switched to the Evo because I was due for a new one.  I love pretty much all HTC phones, they are good quality.

I think you're right. Like if you buy a phone on CL or eBay and get it activated, I don't think you sign a new 2 year. But... I'm not sure if the $10/mo extra will apply.

  • I went to the source and talked to sprint (well, I chatted online with some broad who obviously had english as a second language)... I can buy a junker phone and activate it for $18 but no changes to my plan or agreement if I don't get a smartphone.
