Recommendations/thoughts on new windows?

DH and I are planning to replace our old, single pane aluminum windows with new, more energy efficient windows.

Does anyone have any recommendations for reputable vendors we should call for a quote? And/or any thoughts on what kinds of windows to look at and avoid?

Re: Recommendations/thoughts on new windows?

  • We had our windows replaced 1.5-2 years ago.  We used Brother's Home Improvement and everything went really well.  They did bring one wrong window (their error...we ordered the correct window) and they came back about 2 weeks later with the right window and replaced it in about an hour (and since it was their error they ate the cost of any additional fees)

  • We did this just last year. It makes such a difference!

I don't have any recs for companies/contractors, because we used a local window shop and contractor.

But, we bought Marvin windows (with built in removable screens), and we're very happy with them. We decided to get them unstained/unpainted/untreated since we were going to be having our house painted soon after, but that's what I'd do differently. Get them ready to go! They had a bunch of interior and exterior color options, and I wish I'd just done that.

We had the hassle of getting stain/paint into tiny little crevices, getting paint off the window glass, etc.

We looked at the Anderson windows, but ultimately liked the quality of the Marvin's better.

    GL!

  • Ours have pane divisions built in between the layers of glass so cleaning's like one big window but astheically there are little windows...nice.

If I could, I'd love to have blinds inbetween the panes so they woouldn't get dusty

  • Thanks for the recommendations, ladies. Did you guys do the retrofit windows, or completely new windows? Any thoughts on either?

  • We replaced all of the windows in our home.  We used Omni Windows.  Liked their work and they have been a huge improvement both asthetically and in keeping our house cooler/warmer.
