vomit/ears/teeth

Have any of your kids experienced vomiting when teething?  As you may have seen on FB, Ellie has thrown up several times lately.  (Once each day last Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday -- it happens all of a sudden and before and after she's happy as a clam.)  She (knock wood) hasn't thrown up since Saturday.  Nothing unusual in my diet any of the vomit days.

Today the daycare called me to say that Ellie was screaming a lot and when she screamed she had her hands up around her ears.  I find it a little hard to believe that she can easily locate her ears at this young age, so I'm unsure that it's associated with ear pain.  (My guess is gas, to be honest, or just plain neediness.  If she's doing what I've seen her do, she is just LIVID that she is not being held in the way she wants to be held, and it has nothing to do with pain.  She also had significant gas last night.)  However, maybe they're right and her ears hurt.

No fever with any of this.  No cold.  No other symptoms.

I'm thinking teeth, but all of the experts disagree about the symptoms of teething, so I'm going to my trusted mom friends: have anyone's children experienced either vomiting or ear pain when cutting teeth?

Re: vomit/ears/teeth

  • Oh, and for the record, I called the pediatrician.  They're taking a "wait and see" approach, and if she doesn't seem herself in the morning, we head in.

  • Taylor never had vomiting, but a few months ago, she was starting to put her hands up by her ears and I couldn't figure out why.  I took her in to rule out an ear infection.  So it could be teething, as far as putting her hands up by her ears.  About the same time Taylor started this, she was getting her molars.  Not that Ellie is, but you know what I mean.  So could be teeth is my vote

  • Eli's ears do seem to bother him when he's getting teeth. He also gets bad diaper rash, when he is teething, but that's a different topic. He has had 2 very random vomiting incidents, totally out of the blue like you said. We chalked it up to dehydration, something he ate not agreeing with him or swallowing extra saliva due to teething, so I think that's a possibility.

He has very few symotoms with ear infections though. His first one was after a cold and he had a fever, but this current one he had no cold or fever. His only symptoms were being extra clingy and touching his ear sometimes.

Hope Ellie comes out of whatever it is soon!

  • Raises hand!

Everytime DD gets a tooth she has something extra miserable happen. When she got her first molar she vomited for a few days, then a fever, and constant screaming/crying and she wouldn't only sleep for 15 minutes every 8 hours. This, for a kid who loves to sleep. Wasn't good. Other teeth we've had horrible balance, fevers, diarrhea etc. I've learned everything is possible with teething!

  • no vomit with teething, but when Abby's had ear infections she has always tugged at her ears and wakes up screaming.

When teething she usually is a bit extra snuggly, hands in mouth, diaper rash, and up more at night.

On another note, in the past week there has been a stomach bug running through our house.  Abby had it, I had it, Tim had it, and finally my Mom.  All had vomit/diarrhea and no temp.  Way fun.

  • It's amazing that so many mothers witness these symptoms in their kids, yet the AAP insists that they are not teething-related (although Dr. Sears agrees that they may be).  Thanks for sharing your experiences!  This makes me feel better.  And last night Ellie was happy and a dream to be with, no ear-pulling at all.

  • Yes, and 2 pedi's have told us that teething pain does not cause children to wake up screaming in the middle of the night.....reeaaaallllyyyy???   Would you like to be at my house during the night when teeth are finally making their way through???  You can get up with him!

Anyways, everyone pretty much said it - the symptoms are all over the place.    Nolan constantly tugs at his ears and has now taken to sticking his finger right in there and I've noticed he "vurps" a lot (vomit/burp) which I think is due to excess saliva, like Sarah said.  It seems like teeth take FOREVER to come through and the poor little ones just suffer in the process.   Good luck!
