Moms..Rice Cereal??

I can't believe we can start this already. Katie's pedi said that beginning now, we can try her with rice cereal and see how she likes it.

Just wondering if your LO's liked the rice cereal, and if so, what kind did you get?

(Ohhh and we can also try mushed bananas and applesauce too)

  • I think what we have is Beech Nut...she doesn't seem to care one way or the other for it, but does clench her lips after about 4 or 5 bites. We've given it to her really thinned with breastmilk and by spoon. My doctor says to only introduce with a spoon and the child sitting up to teach good habits. We haven't been giving it to her a lot since she's not that into it and the dr said at this age food is for fun, not nutrition...

We did do green beans last night I put in the grinder and she LOVED them! Complete with "yummm" sounds and grunts.

  • We buy Gerber and give Kyle the Organic Oatmeal instead of Rice.  We tried the rice and he just didn't see to do well with it.  I don't think he liked the taste and I think it bothered his stomach.  He has a sensitive stomach to a lot of things that I eat and soy is one of the things that bugs him.  The rice cereal had a soy preservative in it so we decided to try the Organic Oatmeal and he loves it.

  • Anders was okay with rice cereal, he was far more a fan of apple sauce, bananas, and other mushed up veggies and fruit. For rice cereal we used Earth's Best Organics, and I did like using it when we had runnier baby food (I made all of ours and sometimes a batch would be a bit thin) to thicken it up.

I'm not a huge rice cereal fan, but it is a good starter idea to get texture and the "thought" of sitting in a chair eating from a spoon down.

  • We used Gerber with Mags and she wasn't a fan at all. We ended up having to mix it with her milk to thicken it up b/c her reflux got pretty bad and nothing would stay down. She didn't mind it in her bottle. She definitely preferred fruits and veggies to the cereal.

  • we use nestle and Wyatt loves it, but at 4 months he was still pushing it out of his mouth and wasn't quite ready. Now he can't get enough of the stuff

  • I use Gerber (because it was given to me).  We started rice last week and oatmeal this week.  Julia loves it!  I do 2oz BM and 2tbs of cereal.

  • We gave Parker rice cereal for about a week when he was 5.5 months old.  He didn't care for it at all.  Once he learned to swallow we immediately switched to purees that I made.  He loved sweet potatoes, apples, pears, carrots, peaches, mangos, peas, squash, bananas, and avacados.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I'm curious to see how she does with the rice cereal too. Oatmeal is always another option, as well as bananas and applesauce. I can't wait to see how she reacts!
