Is this a zucchini plant?

This is kind of a strange question, but we have two plants that appear to be zucchini plants growing where we planted flowers.  If they are zucchinis, we have absolutely no idea how they got there.  We do have a zucchini plant in the garden, but I planted a starter, so there were never any zucchini seeds in my house!  The stem feels exactly the same as how the one in the veggie garden feels...

Any ideas?  TIA!

Re: Is this a zucchini plant?

  • I don't think so - the leaves looks too waxy. See what you can google for veggie plants or vine garden plants.
  • I probably should have mentioned that they leaves were shiny because I had just finished watering the flowers.  Does that affect your answer?  I will see what google comes up with though, thanks!

  • ok well my guess is some sort of squash but not zucchini.
  • Well, now I am so curious as to what kind of squash they are!  haha

I guess only time will tell?  lol

  • I wanted to plant butternut but the only seeds I could find were a packette of different winter squash varieties. So I just planted 4 seeds and now I have 4 plants but dunno what is what yet! I hope one is butternut!!!

  • I doubt it's a winter squash variety like butternut - they have smaller plants and vine out HUGELY. Long vines up to 6'. Summer squash plants like zucchini have big leaves, same type of style, but are more like a bush than a vine. Looks very much like a summer squash variety to me. Maybe a bird/animal seeded for you?

That's the only thing I can think of for how it got there!!

As for what type it is, it looks and feels almost identical to the zucchini we have in the raised bed, so I'm placing my bets on zucchini.  Now, keep in mind I'm a total garden novice, so I'm likely wrong, but I guess we'll see once (if?) something edible ever starts to grow on it!

  • Did you have zucchini planted near there last year?  I thought I got all of our tomatoes up in the fall last year, but I must have missed a few, because we have volunteers admist the new peony.

Nope!  This is my first year growing zucchini!  Plus, we didn't have anything planted in that area last year.  I didn't even have a real garden last year - just a box on the deck.
