Birth Control

I know most of you ladies are planning on having kids, however does anyone have recommendations for birth control that doesn't make you gain weight or cranky? I got the Mirena put in last August and I've gained 30lbs since! And no matter what I do I can't drop it! I'm thinking I need to go back on the pill but some of them I gain weight on too. I have an apt with my OB tomorrow but I was hoping for some insight from you wonderful ladies!

Re: Birth Control

  • I think that it all depends on the person. I was in orthotricyclen lo for years and loved it. Now I can't take the regular pill because I have had migraines with stoke-like symptoms. I tried the mini pill but within only about 3 weeks I felt like I wad going crazy. I was crying at the drop of a hat. I had no sex drive and I got horrible acne. Since then I got mirena. I really like it. I have gained weight but I am not sure how much I can attribute to BC as I have not had good eating habits in the past year. I know this didn't completely answer your question but I hope it helps.

  • I use the Nuva ring. I don't get crazy cramps with it and I didn't gain any weight. It's also awesome because I skip my periods with it so I only get it once every 3 months.

I tried Nuva ring before.  I love the concept of it but I spent more time in the bathroom.  Damn thing would not stay.  :)  Even the doc really had no idea why I was having issues with it.

I was on ortho for a long time and then I switched to sprintec.  I think it might be the generic but I'm not sure.  The pharmacy ran out once and subbed it for me.  I didn't mind the sprintec.  I was on it for several years.  I'm off bc now because we will start TTC soon.

    Good luck Erin!

  • I just use a pill (losestrin 24 fe), but I need to change because I haven't had my period in months from it.  Yeah, thankful, but the wondering every month...not cool.  I was on YAZ and loved it but it was so much money.  I haven't found one that works for me yet since.  They have a new Beyaz or something spelled like that.  My sister is on it and she loves it.  I'll probably try that because they also have a coupon where's its $24 for a year and I'm a liking the cheap price.
  • I too used orthotricyclen lo back in the days for years. After my son I got the Mirena and had it for over two years. It was perfect but it affected my libido so I took it off. I'm currently using the natural methods and so far so good.

I had that issue for the first month or so, but now I've been using it for 6 years (wow, crazy) and I don't have any problems at all anymore. I actually check on it every so often because I'm afraid that it's not there since I don't feel it :P

I used the Yaz and I was psycho, I cried at the drop of a hat and hated how I acted on it :(

It was either you loved or hated it.  I was on a generic that made me like that. It was awful and I was so bloated and in so much pain from it!

  • I am currently on Kariva. I have been on it since January and so far so good. I didn't notice any weight gain, a little moodiness but not too bad. I used to have bad headaches and I thought it was from the pill, but turns out it actually helped with them. It's been good to me so I have stuck with it.

  • I was also going to suggest trying natural bc.  There are tons of apps you can download.  I'm going to see how well this works for TTC but I think I will also try it after I have a baby.  I have a friend who has been doing this for a year or so now with good results (ie not KU) however with her it could be a lack of booty. ;)
  • I'm trying to talk DH into a vasectomy :) Lets see how that goes hehe

    Paraguard i love it
  • I am using Nueva Ring also.  I LOVE it.  I forget it's in there all the time and I never gained weight or had severe mood swings.  I was on Yaz for a while and I was crazy and sick all the time.
