moving to a toddler bed

yep, i'm asking again... when did you move LO out of the crib?  Did you move them to a toddler bed or just a mattress on the floor?  how do/did you get them to actually go to bed and not wander the room/play?  do you shut the bedroom door?

oliver is trying to climb out of his crib.  what do i do about that?!  last night he got his leg/ankle stuck and ended up twisting and turning until he almost broke his little leg.  he does this a lot.  thats why i'm wondering if his days in the crib are almost over...?!

thanks ladies.

Re: moving to a toddler bed

  • Good question- I have similar, but K isn't trying to climb out (yet).  He did have to move from a crib to a mat (cot) at daycare, due to younger kids moving in to his room, and they said on his first day that he did great.  So, I am debating moving too.  I will be interested to hear what others have to say.

  • Yes, that sounds dangerous, so I'd move him to a toddler bed soon. I moved Ana when she started climbing out. I just put my girls to bed and close the door. I don't care if they wander the room. They always make it back to their bed for sleep. We have a video monitor to watch them on. We moved the girls to a regular queen size bed. I put a body pillow under the fitted sheet to keep them in somewhat.

  • We just moved Natalie. She never tried to climb out of the crib, otherwise I would have moved her sooner. She is in a full size bed up on a bed frame, with one side of the bed against the wall. She stays in her room because she doesn't know she can get out of bed by herself :o) She calls for me to come get her.

  • B was 28 months when we moved him to his toddler bed.  Our nephew who is 1 year younger than B was in his toddler bed well before we moved DS  because he could climb out.  My sister had to move her DS at like 15 months because he was climbing out and she was worried he was going to get hurt.  They converted it to a toddler bed and I remember it was a rough couple of months because he would not stay in his bed/room.

I think if your lo is able to climb out I would start thinking about the transition for safety reasons.  Since our son didn't try to climb out we held out as long as we could.  Good luck with whatever choice you decide to make.

  • We had Cole in a toddler bed before Gavin was born so around 16 months, Gavin was about that age as well.

We just bought an elmo toddler bed.

Night 1 I sat next to the bed tell he fell asleep, Night 2 closer to the end of the bed, Night 3 closer to the door, so on and so on tell I was eventually outside the room.

We have never shut the door we did put a gate up at the door when they were little.
