Does anyone know about...

Rancho Cordova.

I guess it's more central CA than northern, but the central CA board is a dead stick and Rancho is above San Francisco, so I'm going with northern CA. That's my logic and I'm sticking to it.

Anyhoo, my H has an open invitation to transfer to Rancho Cordova for work. Excluding it's map coordinates, we know nothing about the place. We have family in CA, but neither of us have ever been north of San Simeon.

We're in PA. It is currently 94*F and with about 95% humidity. This is normal summer weather. It sucks and is akin to living in a sauna. The air quality is poo; asthma and severe seasonal allergies are the norm. Hence the enthusiasm to make like a bird and get the flock out of here.

TIA!

Re: Does anyone know about...

  • DH works in Rancho Cordova, it is a suburb of Sacramento. We live in Citrus Heights and DH drives 8-10 miles to work every day. I drive the same distance in the opposite direction up to Roseville. Rancho has some awesome advantages. What would you like to know?
  • We both work in Rancho and lived there for about a year and a half and then bought a house in the Rosemont Neighborhood which is about 5 minutes from Rancho but considered Sacramento. I have to run back to work in a few minutes and can't nest from work but would be glad to answer your questions when I get home.

  • I'm in Rancho right now, sitting in my cube at work.

This is definitely considered Nor Cal, not Central Ca. As for weather...it is hot in the summer, but dryer than what you are used to. The winters are wet (at times) and windy, but no snow and pretty mild compared to the East Coast for sure. Just look up Sacramento weather and that's what you'll get.

As for living in Rancho....there are nice neighborhoods, but there are a lot of not so nice ones too. I would definitely research the different burbs as to where you want to settle down.

Where would you work? Do you have kids? (I wouldn't rec the Rancho schools for the most part.) If you have specific questions or want any more info...you are on the right board...there are a good handful of Sacramento area gals here.

I agree with this.  I'm not the hugest fan of a lot of areas in Rancho, but the advantage is that there are a lot of nicer neighboring areas.

Yeah, the air quality isn't good in the Central Valley and I assume Sac area isn't much better. You should be able to check that on a website though. Yep: http://www.airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.local_state
  • Cool. So I'm in the right area. I'm mostly just looking for general info. We have a nearly 4 month old son, so schools will be a consideration in time. So basically I guess which areas are good, which to avoid... we'd probably rent on the way in instead of trying to buy from across the country.

We both work at the same place, so I could transfer too. We work for Delta Dental and that is on International Blvd in Rancho.

The allergies aren't a huge deal. Everyone out here is allergic to the mold from it being so humid all the time. Dry is good.

  • Like previously said Rancho Cordova has good areas and not so good areas. I knew exactly where the delta dental is in that area. Not far from that area off international and Zinfandel area they just built some nice homes and townhomes. They are trying to create a "downtown" right in that area. My mom bought one of the townhomes when they first built them a couple years ago. She really likes the area. She is close to the freeway without being right off it. There is target, walmart, some restaurants and other businesses within good distance. Right in her neighborhood they have a sitting park type area with a little water area and they often have famil movie nights and some other activites there. Also a short walking distance is a playing park and things like a Chilis, subway, rubios, a yogurt place, pizza place an some other businesses along with a Lowes and a US Bank. I think there is a Nestie over on the Bump that also lives in that general area that could probably giv you some info too. I believe her screenname is HisMrs witha couple of numbers Smile

  • LuckyCaGal is right....and if you'd be off of International and Zinfindel we could wave at each other from building to building...I work across the street.

Lots of good lunch options for work.

Rent for sure to start out...I'm sure there are houses for rent in the neighborhoods behind international. those are the good, new ones in the area. As for buying really look around and pick something that the schools are ok, if you are there for a while, unless you want to do private. Our housing prices took a huge hit so everything is on sale, you can be picky, but don't expect to turn it around and have no problem selling it in two years.

You have quite a few options within a 30 minute commute of that area. Just depends what you are looking for in a community, housing and budget.

Good luck with whatever you decide and we're here if you have any other questions.

  • Thanks for your help, ladies. We're still in the very early planning stages and we're not quite sure what we're doing yet... but this was all helpful.

I'll be back if I have any other questions (which I'm sure I will).
