Charity Fundraising Events?
I found myself outraged by the injustice in the Caylee Anthony case. I decided to turn that anger into action and organize a fundraiser for our local emergency children's shelter for abused and neglected kids.
My first thought was a golf tournament, because we are located right next to a golf course. I am looking for other ideas also, in case that is not feasable. Perhaps some blogs/websites that specialize in charity events that I could look at? Any tips or suggestions would be great. TIA!

To be successful you need DONATIONS. Think about your friends and family and what they can give or who they know. If you know nothing about golf, don't do a tournament. They take some knowledge to put on a good one and usually they cost some bank for people to play in. If your friends and family aren't into that they aren't going to pay and they aren't going to get others to pay.
Other ideas are dances, a cooking event, or even just an event where people sell goods and donate X to the cause. Basically get a Tupperware, Silpada, Party Lite, 31 bags Pampered chef etc. in one big room. Sell 50/50 tickets. Ask the sales people to donate a silent auction item or door prize. Sell some hotdogs or baked goods that people DONATE. Ask a church or school to DONATE the room.
Instead of reinventing the wheel you may ask the shelter to get involved in something that already exists. Smaller scale, you may ask what they are always in need of. I'd assume clothing, toiletries, formula. See if you can work with a doc's office to get samples. If you belong to any mom groups ask them to donate items. Ask some dentists for toothbrushes, eye docs for saline solution and cases.
Most importantly do what you know and don't be afraid to ask for things free or discounted.
This was my thought. I once got all fired up about charity work, and sad but true, lost my steam and felt bad about it. Sometimes it's easier just to write a check or donate time. Starting something is demanding.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
We did a fundraiser BBQ last year, and it turned out really well.
We raised a couple thousand dollars. The main course (meat & rolls) and liquor were donated by local businesses. We made the sides and desserts. We asked for a $5 per person donation at the door.
In addition, we raffled off 6-8 items (sold tickets ahead of time and at the event) - baby quilt, baby blanket, regular quilt, Hershey candy basket, bath toiletries, restaurant coupons, etc - and then accepted donations.

I think that for someone who doesn't have event planning experience, getting involved by helping at an already-established event or doing something small-scale is best. Among other things, I've planned golf tournaments before, it's a lot more involved than you might think.
For small-scale options:
a garage sale ... the marching band at my local high school had a garage sale a couple weeks ago and earned about $5K ... solicit donated items from as many people as you can!
a holiday craft/bake sale or auction (sell donated items) ... my mom's church does this every year in early December, they auction off donated items and use the money to buy Christmas gifts for the women & children at the local battered women's shelter. It's amazing how much people will pay for stuff. My mom made some holiday throw pillows (for a sofa or whatever) and people paid $50 each for them. These are not wealthy people.You'll probably earn more auctioning stuff off than just putting on a price sticker and selling it.
a home sales party (this was mentioned earlier) ... I have a friend who sells jewelry through a direct sales company and she has done fundraising events for organizations where they have an open house for 3-4 hours, provide light snacks, people buy jewelry, and the she gives 50% of her profits to the charity. She's done parties where the charity makes more than $2K in a few hours.

I'm an event planner and have planned a charity golf tournament before and it is ALOT of work. You'd have to consider how you would market the event, how many golfers you'd need, how to take registrations and money etc. Not to mention getting sponsors and donations.
I agree w/ PP...can you get involved in a pre-existing event the shelter does?
