The front of my house looks horrendous. The woman that lived here before us has a lot of nice plants out front, but it's a lot of plants in a small space, some that spread and have to be thinned out, a lot of plants the same height (which I think makes it look even more overgrown) and pretty much all plants right now that are blue/purple. I'm thinking I need to remove some plants and put in other areas of the yard and also bring in some new plants, shrubs etc.
I've been having a hard time finding diy and budget landcaping websites, blogs etc. I want something that shows pictures or diagrams of small modest houses (like mine). All the photos I find online are of huge gorgeous homes with professional looking landscaped yards. I have a small budget and I don't want to spend every weekend maintaining my flowers. Also I have no desire to learn about gardening (not for flowers anyways...if I'm going to spend time gardening it will be for my veggie garden...which is also horrendous by the way). I basically want someone to tell me what and where I need to plant things. Does anyone have any good online resources that may show photos, diagrams, etc?
Also if I go to a garden Center like Longfellows will they have people that can help me figure out which plants I can transplant and which ones to add, how to lay everything out etc if I bring in a photo of the front of my house? Basically I'm looking for someone who is good with landscaping to tell me what to do....without having to actually pay a professional landscaper. LOL
Re: DIY cheap landscaping - resources?
I have found this show to be pretty down to earth.

Check out books from the library that have diagrams. My mom owns several DIY landscape diagram books, there must be some at the library.
