Thinking of going pesco-ovo-lacto veg...reading recs?

I am thinking, for animal welfare reasons, of giving up beef, pork, and poultry. I was an ovo-lacto veg back in college for a few years, mostly because it was trendy, and it was fine, but I wasn't very smart about it. Now, I am interested in reading some good books about going about this the "right" way. Any sources you can recommend would be great...TIA!

  • I'm not sure what books i'd recommend, but maybe this will be a start for you.  It's a good resource for learning about the environmental and health aspects of seafood: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/download.aspx

  • I've been vegetarian for almost 11 years. I eat vegan about 90% of the time, I never consume eggs or milk but maybe two or three times a month I'll eat something with cheese in it.

Anyways, if you're looking for books supporting plant based eating I recommend The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone, The China Study and Food, Inc. There is also a Food Inc movie but I've never seen it, only read the book.

If you're looking for cookbooks The Kind Diet has a lot of good recipes in it also. The book is half information, half recipes.  I also really like the 30 Minute Vegan and The Happy Herbivore. I've heard good things about The Skinny Biitch but I've never read it myself. Sounds a lot like The Kind Diet in that is a lot of information but also recipes.

There is also a website associated with The Kind Diet called The Kind Life and it has a ton of great information and resources on it! I'm on there a lot.

Good luck! Cutting animal products out of my diet (and really daily life for that matter) was one of the best decisions I ever made.
