Just moved to Knoxville...

My husband and I just moved toWest Knoxville a week ago, and were wondering how many other newlyweds were in our area! We're 22, and just got married in May. Looking for fun (cheap) stuff to do and great places to check out. Any cool clubs/groups would be great too!

Re: Just moved to Knoxville...

  • There's all sorts of things to do in Knoxville. Check out groupon and those types of sites to get even cheaper deals. There's a bowling alley between Parkside Drive and Kingston Pike, all sorts of greenways (the one closest to you is probably the one that parallels Executive Park Drive), and then in Knoxville itself there's things like World's Fair Park to go check out. There's also several theaters and tons of concerts in any genre around. Where are you moving from?

    Awesome restaurants:

Cheddars (Clinton Hwy in North Knoxville or Alcoa Hwy, Alcoa near Foothills Mall)

Chandlers (On Magnolia Avenue. Go for lunch and lunch only because its not in a great part of town)

Sweat Pea's BBQ (Old Maryville Pike, Alcoa)

Downtown Grill & Brewery (Gay Street) - the beer cheese dip is delicious

Ye Olde Steakhouse - (on Hwy 441 South Knoxville) - super expensive but oh so good

I can keep going on restaurants but those listed above are my top picks. :)

  • Thank you!

We moved form Rock Hill, South Carolina, where we both went to school. We're slowly getting adjusted but we've both just started work so there's a lot less time to look around! Thanks for all the suggestions! Do you know of any free/cheap exercise classes, maybe at a community center or something?

  • The only think I know of is Zumba. If you go to Zumba.com and put in your zip code it will tell you about local places and I know at one of the churches its only $5 per class. I haven't had time to try it yet but I'm hoping to sometime before the fall. Welcome to Knoxville!

  • I just move in January to Harriman which is west of Knoxville in Roane Co. my new husband grew up here but we love tomato head in market square and the down town grill and brewery. We work out at the Rush. I know they have classes there.
  • Hi! Hopefully you are transitioning well :) I work out at the YMCA off Northshore Dr. It's fairly cheap(but nice)... I'm a grad student, so it's $30 for me. And they have group classes--Spinning, zumba, etc...and they are included in the membership fee. Knoxville is an OK place to live. Hubby is from Atlanta so he finds it quite boring ;) But Knoxville has its charm for sure! Having the mountains nearby is nice, because you can do outdoorsy things...  And there are periodically fun festivals/concerts/etc!
  • I can't believe this!  My husband and I moved to Knoxville from Rock Hill, SC 2 years ago!  What a small world.  Did you go to Winthrop?  We've been married for 8 years and have a little girl named Lily.  She is 4.

Anyway, there is a lot to do in Knoxville!  If you like to ride bikes, there are trails downtown to follow near the TN river.  Market Square is a nice area to eat and just relax on the weekend.  There is usually live music and it is a huge farmers market on the weekends.  If shopping is what you are looking for, you will find tons of shopping in Turkey Creek on the west side.  Check out the Mast General Store too.

We belong to a gym: National Fitness but there's also The Rush that has a lot more locations.  Maybe UT has a fitness class you could take.

    Hope this helps!

    (lurking from The Bump)...

I have tried several different Zumba classes and my favorite instructor was at the West Hills YMCA and her name is Liz. Maybe she's still there. She had the best routines/music IMO.

    Welcome to Knoxville! :)

  • Welcome to TN!

I've been a nestie for awhile, but had to create a new account just to change my username. :)

I live about 100 miles from Knoxville, but I visit there a lot.  Make sure you take a weekend trip to Pigeon Forge.  I think it's East TN's go-to vacation spot.  You just can't beat Dollywood for a fun day trip.

Another girl mentioned Cheddar's, and I would recommend that.  We have one here as well, and they are very reasonably priced for the amount of food you get.  My hubby and I can have an appetizer, 2 meals, and have a mixed drink each for under $25 before tip.

  • My favorite Zumba instructor is Missie G at the Rust at East Town (Knoxville Center) Mall.

    Welcome to Knoxville. :)
