The Zoo!

So today was my 3rd day at the zoo. I love it!!! I am working in the animal embassy where they house the animals used in their education and community outreach programs. Its in the basement of the zoo's animal hospital (go figure I decide to do some volunteer work and I still end up in a hospital lol).

My primary responsibility is diet assistant for approx 20-25 animals. In the morning the keepers bring me the dishes from the previous day.  I have to way any remaining food and record in it a log. If there is a large disparity from the previous day I have to tell them right away b/c the animal may be sick. This happened on my very first day and they rushed the animal up to the hospital.

After that is done I wash the dishes and put out the food for that day. The hardest part is remembering what dish belongs to what animal. Then as the enclosures are cleaned by other volunteers the keepers place that days food in for the animals. While the enclosures are being cleaned the animals are kept in different sized dog crates all around me. I haven't really gotten to interact with any of them but I am super close to them and they are very vocal (LOUD). I also have to hand pat meat balls for the African Serval (it looks like a mini cheetah). She is usually in a dog crate right next to me and as soon as she smells the beef she starts pacing and meowing (hahahaha). I have to keep an eye on her though b/c they told me if she turns her back on me she may spray me!

Then I move onto preparing the food for the next day. There is a big diet book that I have to follow. Everything is weighed by grams. Its a lot of chopping fruits, veggies, greens and hay. Then there are different pellet foods and frozen crickets.  After all that is done I clean some more dishes and clean up the kitchen.

They will also periodically ask me to do some other things for them. Today they asked me to help them transport the African Crane to the main zoo. I helped load her crate up on a golf cart and road with them to drop her off.

I am totally in love with it and want to do it more then just once every 2 weeks!!

Here are a 2 pics I took today.

  • That sounds like so much fun.

  • That sounds really great, I'm glad you like it!

  • That sounds pretty cool.  I have really always wanted to work in a zoo, but to be honest, I am also a bit of a princess and can't handle being out in the heat all day.  I feel for the zoo workers down here in the summer - yuck.  haha.  I'm glad you're loving it!
  • that's so cool! i have a feeling after your shifts when your h asks for dinner you're going to be like oh heck no (with all the chopping and such)! i'm sure they were impressed by your medical experience and therefore felt that would be a good fit for you. just imagine if you didn't have that - you'd probably be shoveling *** and giving us a very different report! LOL j/k
