Cooking ?

We had dinner at a friend's the other night and after browning the ground beef she rinsed it off in the sink. I haven't seen anyone do that before and I wouldn't think you would want that much grease going down your sink drain. Ricky and I buy the next-to-leanest beef we can and after cooking it I tip the pan to the side and soak the grease up with a paper towel (or 2) before I use it to cook my meal.

My question to all of the cooks out there... do you drain your ground beef? if so, do you do it differently than one of the two ways above?

  • I generally pour it into a glass jar we keep under the sink.  Or outside.

  • I drain mine in a collander in the sink. The amount of grease is minimal so I never really thought of it as a problem for it to go down the drain. Then again, I'm using ground turkey not beef.
  • I know you aren't supposed to, but I always drain it down the sink with lots of water.  We also buy extra lean ground beef so it's mostly water and a little bit of fat.  I just put the lid on the frying pan and tip it into the sink to drain.

  • We use turkey more than beef so there's not much grease...but when we do I drain it into a glass jar and then throw that out after using it a few times.

  • I've always just drained it down the sink with the water running. I buy the leanest or next to leanest ground beef or turkey anyway, so there's not much grease.

  • I do the paper towel thing...

    My landlord had problems after the previous tenants left. Evidently they washed a lot of fat down the drain and it solidified and blocked the pipes. He had to dig up the whole driveway to get to the clog and clear it...so yeah, don't want to do that.

  • I just pour it down the drain.  I guess I never really thought about it, but I do by extra lean ground beef so there's never too much.

  • I've always heard if you run hot hot hot water when you're pouring the grease down that it won't clog the pipes. I just use a bowl, then I clean it out every time too.

  • I feel ashamed, but I don't drain my ground beef... I really don't see that much grease though... And my mom doesn't drain hers... And I suck at draining pasta; about a quarter somehow ends up in the sink because they fall out the holes or something.

    Ricky drains bacon grease into a bowl, but some how I have never though to do the same with the beef.

  • I always run hot water as I pour any grease down the sink. I buy lean beef too, so there usually isn't much. My mom has done this for 30 years at my parents house, and it has never caused any plumbing problems, so I figure it works! I have a friend that collects it in a large jar in the freezer. It makes me sick to look at it!
