My husband and I moved to Rochester last week from DC.  Can anyone give us any recomendations of what to do around here?

 Thanks!

    Hi and welcome!

Not sure what area you live in, or what you like to do, but here's a link to some summer events.Summer's a big time for festivals-

Park Ave area is great for walking, restaurants and shops. The villages of Fairport and Pittsford have the canal which is great for walking and bike riding.

City newspaper (you can pick up free at Wegmans and other spots) is good to flip through for events, restaurant reviews, etc

  • Welcome!  Rochester is a great city.  Depending where you live, as Labbie said, there are tons of festivals and things to do.  We have the Memorial Art Gallery, Geva Theater, George Eastman House, and right now Othello is playing at the Highland Park Bowl (I think until this weekend) if you are looking for cultural stuff to do.

This Thursday night at Highland Park there is also a BBQ and music festival.  There is also an International Dance Festival at Nazareth College.  The Clothesline Arts Festival is coming up soon, we have the Best Public Market in the country (It's true!  http://tinyurl.com/2wdezn8)

If you like sports, Rochester was also voted one of the best cities for sports fans.  We have the Red Wings (baseball), Rhinos (soccer), Amerks (hockey), as well as women's soccer and arena football and about a dozen other teams.

If you are looking for nightlife, check out Alexander Street downtown.  There are a ton of bars and clubs there.  Or check out Marge's on the beach in Irondequoit.  There's Seabreeze amusement park if you want rollercoasters, and the park at Charlotte (pronounced char-'Lot here) has a beach and ice cream stands and a carousel.

Rochester has great restaurants, too.  If you like BBQ we have Dinosaur, Sticky Lips, Nola's, and Beale Street, all of which have amazing food.  You can't throw a rock without hitting a good Italian restaurant here.

Let us know if you're looking for something specific!

  • Thanks for the tips!  I am definately going to check them out!

  • If you have a sweet tooth, you have to have Andy's Candies.  The location in Greece is open year-round, I think.
