DH just accepted a job in Elmhurst and we are relocating from metro Detroit. We are leaving family and friends so this will be tough for us - especially for my 5 year old son. We are heading to Chicago next weekend to look for a rental in the Wheaton or Naperville area. Any insite on the two? Which do you like better and why? What are the differences besides location and the size of the towns (I know Naperville is bigger)? Any recommendations for a short term rental? We need to sell our home here before we buy there....a short term rental seems like the best option. DS is starting kindergarten this year so I don't have a lot of time to get us moved...help!
Re: I am joining you...we are relocating to west suburbs!
There are alot of places convenient to Elmhurst beside Naperville and Wheaton, if you're open to other towns too. Both are very nice burbs though. Elmhurst itself is very nice. All 3 towns have cute downtown areas. Naperville is really big, so you could end up pretty far from Elmhurst if you're near the Aurora border.
You should find a real estate agent. She could help you find rentals. Other towns to consider are Downers Grove, Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills. Good luck!
Welcome to the Chicago area! I actually currently live in Elmhurst (going on 2 years) and would definitely recommend it. It is a little pricier then farther out but if you look north of North Ave or south towards Spring road there are some deals to be found. I don't know much about renting but I have noticed quite a few houses on the market at the moment so there may be a deal to be had.
Wheaten, Glen Ellyn, Oakbrook, Hinsdale (super expensive), and Downers Grove are all also nice suburbs within about 15-25 minutes and may also be options. I personally would stay away from Naperville just because it is so large and has horrible traffic....I sometimes commute to that area for work and on a bad day of traffic it could take a LONG time to get to Elmhurst.
I wish you the best of luck in your move!
