How much yarn are you willing to waste to change skeins at the end of a row?

I am crocheting a blanket and trying to decide if I should cut the yarn and switch skeins at the end of a row, while turning, or to just use it up.  How much more difficult is it to deal with the end in the middle of a row.  I'm talking about weaving them in and finishing the project.  TIA, I'm not a very sophisticated crocheter. :)

  • I just use it up.  I actually kind of think it's easier to weave in in the middle, rather than the end.  Unless you'll do a border around the edge.  Ends are pretty easy to hide in there too.

  • Agreed with PP -- I try not to waste much and I think it's easier to weave in ends in the middle. But now that I learned Russian join, I use that for everything. No ends to weave in = happiness. Here are instructions http://www.knittinganyway.com/freethings/russianjoin.htm and you can google for a ton of video demonstrations.

  • I'm willing to waste quite a bit.

  • I use it up.  I don't mind doing a bit of finishing at the end if it means less waste, especially if I'm cutting it close for having enough yarn to finish the project--that's happened...a few times.

  • In crochet, I pretty much use it up.  To some extent it depends on the pattern though and how well I can hide the ends in the middle of the row, but the majority of the time this isn't an issue.

Since I last crocheted I've learned the Russian join and the felted join and both are very useful for clean joins if you prefer.  Instructions for both are on the KnittingHelp website.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
