I think I've finished every book club book over the last two or three years that we've done, but I just don't know if I can do this one. ![]()
I'm about 125 pages in and I am just so confused and not enjoying it. WTF are the black jewels and why can only women (or maybe it's men?) wear them? Who is Jaenelle and why does everyone care about her? It's like the author just makes up names of people and places to throw more names out there to confuse me. I know the three main guys (but really nothing about them except that the one cares about the little girl and maybe the other two are gay??) and that's it. Bridges to realms? Mist and voices? Rings of obedience?! Who controls those?
WTF and help?
Re: Lucky/book club ladies (possible spoilers)
I started it on Friday, read for about an hour and kind of felt the same way. Although Lucky said it would be weird since I wasn't there for her description, so I will give her that
But yeah, I'm not sure I'll keep reading...
Haven't even picked it up yet.
Almost texted you last night, LB, to see if I should even try.
Ok. It looks like nobody is going to finish it, which is cool. I've recommended this series before with a lot of success but it was all people who read primarily in the fantasy genre so maybe that's part of the disconnect. Fantasy can be one of those genres that is hard to get into if it's not your thing. Plus there are a lot of sub-genres within fantasy. But, I will answer your questions...so....
WTF are the black jewels and why can only women (or maybe it's men?) wear them?
Everyone who is part of "the blood" gets jewels. They vary in colors and some colors are WAY stronger than others. Black is as strong as it gets and it's rare. Men and women can get black jewels. There are also black widows which is something different. These are usually mostly women but there are rare instances where you get men that are black widows (Saetan and Daemon are examples). Their skills become more apparent later in the book but they can be extremely dangerous.
Who is Jaenelle and why does everyone care about her?
Jaenelle is a blood, and she is not only a witch, but she is Witch. Basically, she's the future badass of the whole book. She is the most powerful witch out there. She is also going to be an extremely powerful queen, and one that people want to serve, not one who is cruel. In the beginning of the book when they're focusing on Daemon and Lucivar they talk about how the current queens make a mockery of how their world is supposed to be, blah blah blah. Jaenelle is basically the one that they forsee as bringing back their ways and getting rid of all the queens who are evil and have enslaved a lot of the men. You can be a witch and not a queen. You can't be a queen and not a witch.

Saetan, Daemon, and Lucivar. Daemon and Lucivar are brothers. Saetan is their father but up to this point they don't know it. They all care about the little girl because they've been waiting for her to come along. They all want to be members of her court eventually. None of them are gay. They will sometimes use their seduction type powers to make other men uncomfortable so that's probably where you're getting that vibe.
Bridges to realms? Mist and voices? Rings of obedience?! Who controls those?
Hmmm...bridges to realms has to do with how people move between the different realms within the world. The rings of obedience are controlled by whatever queen's court the male is currently serving in. They're supposed to be something that isn't taken advantage of and the men are supposed to be proud to serve their queens but it's not like that because the current queens in charge are evil.
I think that's it.
