home grown meat

Hey there!  I am new to this venue! I am interested in becoming a little more self sustainable every year. My kids and I have been raising lambs, chickens, turkeys and calves for various 4H projects over the past few years.  I have discovered that raising your own meat and eating locally grown meat is a great way to go green. It is also a way to make sure you know exactly where your food is coming from, what it is fed and how it has been treated. If you're going to eat meat, why not choose a more responsible way to eat it? This year I am looking for a buyer for my daughter's lamb. I want to sell it to someone that can appreciate the amount of time and effort that it takes to raise your own food. If anyone is interested in buying fresh home grown lamb, or if you are interested in buying half with someone let me know. Raising a lamb, raising our own food has really REALLY changed my views on eating!

Re: home grown meat

  • That sounds great. I'm afraid we can't buy your lamb, lol but love what you are doing. I had never heard of 4H until I met my husband, as he and his siblings were all active in it.

They used to have chickens and raised exotic birds. I've already told him that when we get a place with some land, I definitely want us to have chickens. I haven't brought up the idea of other animals yet, but I know he is great with all kinds.

Definitely keep doing what you're doing. I believe our nation needs more producers like you and less consumers.

  • That is a really great idea!  I doubt you'll find someone to buy your lamb over the internet, but if I were you, I would consider working with someone at your farmer's market. That farmer already has to contacts in place to process your lamb according to USDA guidelines, and an outlet for its sale afterwards.  The farmer could take your lamb to slaughter with their lambs, and sell your lamb along with theirs at the Farmer's Market.  You could work out that the farmer gets some percentage for their contribution.  That way you get money, and your lamb gets bought by people who care about how it was raised.
