splash pads - enlighten me

(I feel dumb asking this)

What exactly are splash pads that you ladies speak of? I have never seen or been to one but they sound like something I could take Benjamin to.

Do they cost anything? Where can I find them? (I know Ames doesn't have one)

Re: splash pads - enlighten me

  • they're like the kiddy section at the pool, just shawllow water and fountains and what not.

Do you know what a wading pool is? like that just more fancy. LOL

  • Ankeny's splash pad has no standing water at all - it's basically just a cement area with fountains that splash up from the ground, a bucket that dumps water over the area from up-top and various other "splash" gadgets.

Ashby's splash pad is similar to a wading pool in that it does have standing water - but also has the splash gadgets listed above.

I think you'd be fine at either one (Ankeny's does seem to be a bit colder water temps), but one a hot day you'd be fine.  I like Ankeny's for my 15 month old, only because the standing water makes me nervous.  However, I'm also chasing his sister...so keep that in mind as my view could be biased on my situation.

Either way - I'm sure he'll love it!

  • Isn't there a wading pool at Brookside park in Ames? Have you checked out the aquatic center?

  • Yep, there is a wading pool there but I didn't know what the differnce between that and a splash pad was. The new aquatic center is nice but always super busy on the weekends (when we would most likely go).

  • The brookside wading pool is cold but was good with Wes on a hot day. If you do the aquatic center. On a weekend, I recommend toddler time (11-1). It's not nearly as busy then!
