Anyone have a cordless electric lawn mower?

Hi - I'm visiting from other boards, hoping y'all can help!  TIA

We need a new lawnmower and I was thinking electric, but our lawn is too big for a corded mower so I'm looking into cordless ones.  It seems though that the ones in my price range are not self-propelled.  Not sure if that's common in electric mowers but I'd like MH to not have to kill himself mowing since he's the one who does it.

If you have one, would you recommend it and why/why not?

  • If your yard is too big to be mowed using a corded electric mower w/ an extension cord, it's too big to be mowed on a charge with a cordless.

Really?  One of the ones I saw said it would handle 7,000 - 10,000 sf on one charge.  I would think you would need multiple extension cords to handle that kind of yard, no?

Note:  If that came across snarky it wasn't my intention I promise.  I'm genuinely curious and trying to make a good decision! :)

Really, it doesn't have to be self propelled. Unless your spouse has some debilitating medical condition or is over the age of 80 or something.

I work outside in the landscape industry. In the south. In the summer. I have never used a self propelled mower; when I mow it is either pushing, or driving a tractor, and I much prefer pushing. I am a woman, and I could push a mower ALL DAY LONG. Mowing is about the least demanding outside job I do.

  • We had one for our previous home (our new home's yard is too large -- approx 3 acres).  I loved it.  Our lot was approximately 150 x 200 and it generally got both front and back yard done off one charge of the battery.  At any rate, it was able to do as much as I was willing to do!  It was not at all hard to push; I don't think it was as heavy as a gasoline-engine mower.  Best of all, it was quiet and easy to start and DIDN'T STINK!
  • We just got a Ryobi from Home Depot and DH is really happy with it.  Not hard to push and very quiet.  Our yard is small, but it could easily do one 3x the size on the same charge.

  • I'm glad there are some out there that can mow a large lawn on a single charge.  When we were looking, they all said they could do ~1/3 acre.  Good luck!
