:( House buying woes

This has been such an emotional and disappointing process. We haven't found anything we liked as much as the original house yet (which was a sh*thole once we got the inspection) and everything is more expensive. My dad pointed out that for what we're paying we could get a really nice new house in a different area, but of course, the schools in those areas suck. So we're back to looking in Cockeysville. All the houses in our price range (we're buying lower than we the high end that we can afford in case I end up being a SAHM for the first few years of our hypothetical future child's life) in this area (or other equally nice areas) are from the 1960s or older... and even the ones that are kept up the nicest have their issues.

:( It's just an annoying process. We saw three houses on Sunday and it was a huge letdown. We're going to see three more on Wednesday after work, and hopefully those will be better, but they're listed pretty high, and even though they're nice they are going need to come down a bit.

Re: :( House buying woes

  • I hear ya.  Houses in this area are ridiculous.  We bought our condo 3 years ago just before the market went downhill because its what we could afford (and we were excited to just get out on our own).  Would have loved to have gotten a house but couldn't afford one at the time.  So now we've been watching all our friends buy houses and they are getting them for the same price, if not just a little more, then what we paid for our condo.  Its depressing to think about, but at least I know that we love our condo, and are in a better area than some of our friends who were able to get houses.

You will find something, it will take time but if this is your "forever" home then don't settle.  You know that though since you've been looking.  It is an annoying process but you guys WILL find something :)

  • I'm sorry, Brea :(  I'm glad in this area we were fortunate enough to build because I couldn't imagine what you're going through!  The 3 "used" houses that we looked at caused enough pain for me.  I fell in love with all of them for different reasons and I think it was just because it's a house, compared to our crap apartment.

Just know something will come along, and at least you aren't at the end of your lease and you're talking about renewing or month to month rates while you're still looking. :(

You know I'm here if you need to chat!

  • Buying a house is an investment though and you don't want to jump into a house that you aren't happy with. When we bought our we figured we will be here 5 to 7 years until we have our first child and maybe second.

Have you looked at Catonsville area?

  • I'm so sorry Brea. I definitely understand what youre going through. We put in an offer on three different houses that fell through for various reasons, and honestly the house we bought I wasnt crazy in love with at the time. Its taken some time, and some work, but I am finally starting to be crazy in love with our house that is now a home.Just dont get too discouraged, it'll happen.

We've looked a bit there, we always end up coming back to this area since there are better schools and the pricing for houses isn't drastically different.

We're checking out three more on Wednesday. We drove by them tonight and the neighborhoods are nice. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks for letting me vent :)

We're definitely trying to find our "forever" home. We know we may not be there forever but we want to be happy enough with it that it could be.

  • How handy is your FI? When we bought our house in 06 there wasn't a whole lotta room for being picky, they were selling so fast. So even though it's a total rollercoaster and stressful, it could be worse. Our house was built in 1967 and is now worth like 40k less than what we paid for it! :( We're gonna be here a long time, but we're ok with it cuz the location is good and FI is handy enough that we've been able to fix all the things we didn't like or that weren't good enough for us. I'm really content now (other than wishing we had more than one bathroom) and I know we could have a kid or two here and be fine. Good luck girlie, you'll find one!
  • OMG Brea, if you picked your dream home in 4 houses...I think I'd have to slap you, haha!  There is no such thing as a perfect house.  I literally looked at over 100 houses for over a year.  The right one is out there and it will be a roller coaster even AFTER you purchase the house.  You have to wait until the right house and enjoy the process.  House after house after house I saw and then I walked into my house I bought and I turned to my aunt (my relator) and said this is it, I'm home.  It's a weird feeling and I had even already made an offer on another house that I was like this is really nice, but definitely on my high side.  I ended up backing out because I didn't have the feeling of a home there.  It will come and it will be just the right time.  Keep your head up and keep searching.  Maybe your dream home is in Scottsdale...hmmmmm.....
  • Haha, good point! :)

We've looked at well over 100 online, I'm sure, but only 4 in person so far.

I can't wait to have that feeling of home.

Annnndd... maybe it is in Scottsdale? Hmmmm... :P

  • I'm sorry Brea that has to be stressful! But like Sarah said you'll know your home when you find it! It's out there, also don't be afraid to look a little outside your range because you may be able to get it down enough to be in your price range :) Hopefully you'll find it soon so it'll be one less stresser!
  • I say everything happens for a reason.  So while I know it's frustrating you will find something.  Maybe you need to just wait a few more months and look again.  This can change in that time.  Try to look some of the cosmetic stuff too.  You can always fix and change things.  As long as the home itself is in good shape you will be fine.

Sarah I bought the 4th house I looked at!!! :P

Oh, I was in person well over 100 houses.  Probably like a thousand online hahaha.
