Energy usage

What are some things you do around your home (habits you have) to save energy? I am trying to keep my electric usage each month under 400 kWh, and gas under 12 therms. I haven't been using the air conditioner unless temps are in the 90's, and I unplug lamps, small appliances and phone chargers when I'm not using them.

What are your energy-saving tips?

Re: Energy usage

  • On top of the ones you listed - CFL bulbs, not leaving things plugged in after they're fully charged (laptop, phone, etc.), cooking things in the microwave or toaster oven instead of oven when I can (we're fully electric), turning hot water heater down in the summer, insulated blinds to keep heat/cold out

  • I don't unplug lights because none of my lamps draw electricity when not in use.  I hang laundry and wash clothes in cold water.  I use programmable thermostats.  I purchase Energy Star and high efficiency appliances.  The programmable thermostats and high efficiency projects were also eligible for rebates and/or tax credits. I use rain barrels.
