has anyone moved to new position within same company?

need advice..

i have changed jobs (companies) pretty much every two years since i graduated college in 2007-i guess you could say i get bored. i have been in my current position for almost 2 years now and another position within the company has opened up. i really want to apply, but part of me is saying to stick it out where i am. if i stay in my current position, there is a good chance i could be promoted next year, but i know how business works and this is definitely not guaranteed

i am not very happy currently-issues with manager and coworker, but they are just me personally not liking them. there also isnt much of a challenge-i am currently in grad school and the requirement for my job now is high school diploma or ged. i do not mean anything nasty by that...just saying

do i just go for it and apply for the new position (i understand i may not get it) or will moving around so much kick me in the butt in the future? anyone in or been n a similar situation?

Re: has anyone moved to new position within same company?

  • On the one hand, there is a difference between moving from company to company every other year and moving within a company. If it's a job where you'd be moving up, and can show that you've been at the same company (but moving upward) for 2+ years, I'd see that as a positive.

On the other hand, I'm a little concerned that you find yourself getting bored after a couple of years at each position so far. Is it because you've taken positions that require a lot less education and haven't been challenging? If so that's NBD IMO. If it's another reason, you may want to re-evaluate why you're doing what you're doing.

I worked for the same company for about 5 years. I was in one position for about half that time, and there really was no way to move up. Another position, which would be a promotion, presented itself and I went for it. Now I can show 5 years of experience within the same company, but that I didn't stay stagnant while I was there.

Ditto all of this.  I moved w/in my company and I don't think that looks bad.

But yeah... you need to start figuring out why you're moving jobs every 2 years.  At some point, it may very well come back to bite you.

  • thank you for the responses. this would be a lateral move for me, but the new position would have many more opportunities for advancement

as far as why i lose interest, i don't know what my problem is. i have been changing my mind like this my entire life-when i was younger they said it was because i am 'gifted' and my doctor recently recommended i get tested for add, but for some reason i keep putting that off.

i think i am going to go for it. i spoke to the woman in hr about it and she strongly encouraged me to apply...it can't hurt to learn more about my organizatio. hopefully i enjoy this job more and can stick with it...
